Red face Where to start?
Hi Everyone!

I am new to this site.
I am a math tutor and I am looking to start my own business but really don't know how to go about it. I already have several clients that said they would be happy to be used as references but I am more concerned about the leagal end of things. Does anyone have an suggestions on where I should start?

Lots of people get caught up in the PROCESS of starting a business and all the legalities (dba, incorporating, ein #/tax id, reseller permit, local business license), but as I recall when I first got off the ground, I didn't have any of these things. They came later, step-by-step. Of course, I have that all in place now. It's all up to you, of course.

On the other hand, for me, having a starving, passionate group of piano players looking for the materials I had to offer was more important! I know many people that take care of these "business" things above, but can't turn a profit.

Looks like you have clients though. Start by developing some type of referral system and reward them for recommending other people to you. If you want an online presence, getting a CMS-based site (like phpnuke, postnuke, mambo) should work well with tutoring. Your members will have a host of features and this technology is relatively cheap to get started with. I've even seen plug-ins with postnuke specifically focusing on tutoring (aTutor, I think).

For reference,
Sba.gov is good.
www.findlaw.com is also good for legal reference.

Warning: Don't get analysis paralysis though. This is where you get so caught up in researching that you don't actually take action. Things get overwhelming to the point where you just feel discouraged and never pursue your dreams! Read my quote below...
