I pay as little attention to news as possible, and encourage all of my teammates to give it up, too. Too much negative energy.

Newspapers are losing money to online news, so Rupert Murdoch wants to charge people for reading online news.

    Would you pay?

That's interesting - reminds me of what Tim Ferriss said in The Four Hour Workweek. Just curious - do you ever have the itch to read the news just to see what's up?

bananaman, absolutely not! I would never pay for online news. Rupert Murdoch is getting crazier the older he gets - I used to have a lot of respect for him (in fact, I still do), but it's way past time for him to retire.

To me, it makes perfect business sense for Murdoch to want to charge for online news. He owns newspapers which are rapidly losing money.

Newspapers make their money from selling space in the classifieds, and as less people read newspapers, less money is made by the classifieds.

But online news sites don't have a classifieds section. People sell stuff on ebay, Craiglists, forums and free classifieds/directories.

Journalists writing for online news still have to be paid, there are still costs associated with investigating, editing and publishing news. Online news sites are spending money producing content, but have no reliable source of income(classifieds). And if there is no income, the quantity of journalists and the quality of the news takes a dive.

News is not important enough for me to pay for, but from a business perspective, I can see the reasoning for Murdoch to want payment. Paying for online news is no different than paying for newspapers - you are paying for the content.

Digg, Techcrunch, Google News. I'm mostly into the social network type news sites these days.

I do understand where he's coming from - except he bought bad businesses in the first place (same with MySpace). Seems to me he's lost his mojo (hence my comment stating he should retire!). I would say Rupert needs to look to the Huffington Post for an up-close look at how new media functions. HP thrives on ad revenue. The news is free.

Well, if you ask me, I prefer to visit CNN official web site, because there are many interesting and latest news and articles.

With regards to paying for news and the dying newspaper industry. The days of paying for the everyday news are over, dead, dying and gone. And the industry is starting to collude to implement paywalls on their websites. And like stealthy, I will not be paying for world or national news.

I would however gladly pay for access to good financial articles, or any other specialized newspaper styled websites on a specific interest. A general interest newspaper just doesn't have enough content I'm interested in to make it worth any amount of money.
