    What's your Internet connection like?

A bit of a shameless plug here and also a bit of curiosity as to what sort of Net access plans you guys are on?

I've been having some troubles with the cost of getting online up here living on campus... it's pretty ridiculous, you can read about it here: The Saga of Battling a Monopoly

    hmm...

Maybe we can each vote in the poll above and then post something like:

    City: Wollongong, Australia
    Provider: Chariot - www.chariot.net.au
    Speed: 256kbps
Cost: $132 for 4GB (NOT monthly)

    ... yyep, it's a monopoly

Tell me what you think, rants, advice etc

    cheers

Here in Ireland the highest we can get is 4mb I think.

Ive got 2mb with eircom. The download limit is a measly 10 gb and it costs about $25 per month.

    Rogers "Extreme" Service
    Speed: 6mbps down/1mb up
Cost: 49.95 CAD per month (plus you have to buy the modem at $100)
    Type: Cable Modem

    My Day Job
SCBN Telecommunications Inc. (Simcoe County Broadband Network)
Speed: 30mbps bi-directional (they uncapped us the other day, maxing at 50mbps)
    Cost: A lot of dough*
    Type: Fiber Optic
Employer: Simcoe County District School Board
    ISP URL: http://www.scbn.ca/
    Employer URL: http://www.scdsb.on.ca/

    * I had contacted SCBN for a quote for service to my house, which backs onto a fiber line. They quoted me about $1500-2000 for installation and $65 per month, per megabyte/second. Unfortunately, they cannot provide me service to my home as my house is not zoned Commercial with the City.

Yes, many providers are starting to introduce it now, Wanadoo - which is becoming Orange Broadband has started to introduce this, and BT Yahoo! are starting to introduce the 8mb service

Depends on where I'm at. Heh, people really should put some security on their wireless networks. But at home it's 512kbs

I have the basic Road Runner package. They have an upgrade but this is fast enough for me. It runs $40/mo but I got them to down to $30. When I do a test at Cnet's Bandwidth site I get an average speed around 1.5 mbps.

The DSL around my area is just as fast and twice as cheap. AT&T is offering it for somewhere around $12 (I think) to new subscribers for basic DSL. I would switch over but I use my road runner email for my business and I would also need a new wireless modem. This is good enough for me for now.

The different speeds people are on seem to be spread pretty nicely.

I think we should all chip-in and sponsor the person on dialup

Don't some exchanges only pump out about 2 meg so those who pay for 8 upwards wouldn't get the benefits ?

Sweden is quite a bit ahead of you guys when it comes to broadband. Here you can buy 100mbit/s for about $30 a month. 10mbit/s - $15. Full duplex of course
