Volunteers and Charity - Where to Find?

I am developing a community site for non-profit use. The sites goal is to bring people who need help together with people who want to help. Some of the site goals are:

Monthy spotligh of charitable causes
Directory of reputable non-profit groups
Articles on how non-profits can use the internet better
Listings of volunteer opurtunities
Tips/Articles on how individuals can help

My question is how to find volunteers? I am looking for sites to request help. The code and design work are taken care of. What I need are contributors, editors, and writers.

volunteers

Idealist.com is an extensive matching site that allows you to find volunteers depending on what you are looking for, but also has other features like links to other organisations, news and event calendars, and tools for individuals and charities.

All the best

maryem idealist.com was one of the inspirations. I am hoping to make the site more personal with interviews and stories on causes with a personel view.

Eric here is the basic concept as of now.

The editors will guide the sections of the site(technical, reviews, listing, news/stories). At first the editors will most likely also write and contribute. As help grows the editors would review the writers, contributors, and content in thier section.

Writers will provide content in the form of interviews, news, and articles for the section that volunteer for. Examples are personal interview of a family with a child going through brain surgury for seizure treatment. This is a story I am working on now. The parent is a single working mother with two children. Her medical bills are continuly growing. Other articles might be how to chose a web host or designer.

Contributors will provide less intensive content. They could add links to a resource page, update non-profit directories, or quick news updates.

I am hoping to give the site a personal face through interviews and stories resulting in inspiring others to help.

Give the site a personal face
I think this sounds great. You can also contact corporate entities and foundations as well as philanthropic companies in order to enlarge our circle of help. Then you would have it: charities, volunteers, philanthropy mentors, and current events.

One thing to be careful with, though: not to overindulge in the warm fuzzy feelings of charitable giving. Too much is too much.

All the best
