Various Dumb Questions....
I have a few questions that would probably take me just a few minutes to look up but i like using YE just for the fact that i can get opinions also....so here they are:
1) My site hasnt been listed with DMOZ yet (they take forever) ...i noticed that there are many, many, many directories out there that use the DMOZ feed. Basically i am asking is....once your site is listed to DMOZ do you a good boost in your PR from all the directory back links? Just thought id get peoples opinions...
Also.....
2) Which one have you had more success with.... Overture or Google advertising? Or maybe other advertising places?
3) With Overture or Google do you have to have money down before you can start advertising or can they just bill you at the end of the month?
4) Lets also talk about Bizrate and Dealtime..... Anyone use them with sucess, etc. It looks like to me its a good cost effective way to get traffic and sales but you have to do good product research. (other words.... make sure you are the cheapest with that product or really close or you are the only one that carries the product, etc.)
5) Affiliate marketing..... anyone do this heavily? It seems to be the most cost effective but not as prgressive form of advertising. Its also good to brand your store imo.... if you can get lots of banners out there, etc you will seem like you are a larger business, etc.
Ok.... lets get this discussions started!

Couple more questions that we could probably discuss that just came up.
1) I use a program to gather all the back links of my competitors. Ive noticed there is a pattern. They are either links on link sites of personal sites, etc. that were obvioulsy put on there manually or They are either DMOZ directory sites or just regular old directories that you input the info.
Now i also noticed that one of my competitors seems to be listed on every library related site there is. What im thnking is possibly there is one site that send info to the libraries? or maybe something like that. Anyone ever heard of anything like this?
Also i noticed a lot of directories that arent DMOZ and also dont have a contact or a add your site link. Were do these links come from...any ideas?
Thanks

Good grief Joey, don't you have any more time on your hands? j/k
1) Submit to DMOZ and forget about it. In a hundred years or so take a snoop in the directory, you may be listed by then.
2) Don't use Overture or Google so I can't help. In my not so humble opinion.. build joint ventures instead of adwords. In your situation I wouldn't worry about adwords, you have a great start in your campaigning already. Petfinder will bring you more traffic that you realise.
3) Yes, you have to have the money in your account. If the money runs out, your ad's stop. On a not so wonderful note, Google will just help themselves to more money off your credit card (or they used to) when your balance runs out. Keep an eye on this.
4) Let's not. I don't know anything about them.
5) Create an affiliate program. You wouldn't believe how many people join them in hopes of making a few bucks. Again, joint ventures will work with affiliate programs as well.

Joey,
The kind folks who are involved in pet rescue check petfinder daily, even before they check their email. If they find (insert breed here) on petfinder they then send emails to everyone who is involved in rescue. Any advertisments you have on petfinder will be seen by a large population, there is no doubt about it.
Which brings me to another thought. All rescue organizations are always looking for supplies, food, bowls, leaches etc to help care for the animals. Even top rescue organizations (the dogs who searched the WTC for example) had a call out for help with supplies. Maybe you could partner with these groups for products. If anything, it would sure promote your name.
As well, check into the underground animal transport connections as these people always need toys and supplies.
Then there are Vet offices, SPCA's, local shelters, breed clubs, pet fairs, therapy groups, guide dog organizations, zoo's, local weirdo's who have 92 cats, and me. I want some bitter apple and I can't get it in Canada.
