I cant remeber where I saw it, but it was on a newspaper, the top 3 social networks are
    facebook,myspace,bebo

twitter took over but i am not sure of its current rank,

it really brings a great avenue to online and offline marketing
but the downside of that is anybody in the generation x might be hard to market to generation y to keep up with 'whats good, whats not'

ya, i'd agree with those three, but although forums seem to be on the decline, specific niche forums, or more general forums like YE can be of great help to network.

I agree with the above post, but simply joining them won't help you. You have to be active and continually add to the community. Best of luck!

I don't necessarily agree with the others that Facebook, bebo and myspace can be the most effective at generating leads for your services. In fact, I would recommend more targeted professional sites such as getafreelancer, asmallworld.net and maybe twitter for showcasing your portfolio.

ACMAir, Chris Brooks, and NatalieStahl all bring up great points.

Have you considered trying to get some articles published (in print or online) that tell business owners and managers how to select a skilled graphic designer and what they should look for in the process?

This can benefit you in two ways:

    1) Usually when you have an article published, your credentials appear at the end of the article and can include your web address to drive traffic to your website. If, for example, you get an article published in a trade magazine for small retail business owners, many of them will likely visit your website to see your work. If you have a compelling website, some of that traffic will convert into sales for you.

    2) You can build your brand equity by noting on your website that you have been published or quoted by media outlets. This can be a very effective way to differentiate yourself from your competition.

    Good luck!

I would recommend eLance if you are really after the jobs, not just for fun. Show your profolio there and start to bid for the projects.

Has anyone on here actually got any leads that lead to actual sales from facebook, myspace or twitter?

    J. Counce makes an excellent point here. Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are the top 3 social networks, but look at what that says...they are SOCIAL networks. Not business networks. Natalie and MarketingForYou also make good comments in that you need to post & blog on more targeted 'sites for people actually doing business, not socializing.

Get a blog, put in some good content of your own creation and show off your skills. Then go to the more professionally targeted 'sites (like LinkedIn) and become known there as the expert in what you do.

Let us know how that worked out for you and good luck.

If you're looking for professional networking sites, consider Linkedin and Plaxo. They differ from Facebook and MySpace in that they are more driven towards your business than they are towards your personal life. The emphasis revolves around what you sell, and it gives the opportunity to network with other professionals. There are also opportunities to blog and build up your credibility.
