Even if you are making $7 an hour at 30 hrs/wk you've made 5,000 Bones in 6 months whereas you may work a lot of hours building a business from scratch and just make 2,000 in the first 6 months, but then make 1 mil the 2nd 6 months. It all depends. You may work a year and lose money... it happens.
Replace your first job with your business when you make more money doing it. Use your first job to fund your business at first. I'd research eBay (if thats what you want to do) and find things in the wholesale/bulk section and then look to see what they sell for, SELL for, not list for and see if you make any money. you can make a bit of money doing this, once you get several things going at the same time, but you have to do your research first. Watch auctions with that item and see if it sells and for what. Do this over a couple weeks and then you can make a good decision.
If you have a skill (computers, websites, trades, hair styling, etc) use it and do small jobs on the side to make some cash and see if you can make a business out of it. Just think of what you're good at and go for it, but don't be afraid to learn a new skill if you can make money doing it (and you enjoy it, of course).
