Should you block Facebook at work?

Some companies do it because it's considered an entertainment site, security hazard, or something not work-related. Other companies consider Facebook an essential part of marketing-- to network with others. What do you think?

I agree with the posts made. If Facebook is used for marketing, then those tasked with that area of work should have access. Any other employee has no reason to be connected to Facebook while at work.

I would just let marketing personnel use it. Or open it by time of day to the rest - like during lunch. Then again, people seem to think they can't get viruses through Facebook. It depends on what technology is involved, but certain hardware firewalls can do content filtering based on IP or MAC to block specific users, during specific times. Some even have web app control, so you can block games on Facebook, but not Facebook entirely.

I think it should be allowed for marketing strategy reasons and recreation, with limitations of course. Currently we can access it in my workplace.

It definitely should be allowed - especially if you're a community manager or accountable for social media marketing and strategy. It's also a relevant tool for searching on current trends, topics of interest and real time news.

While you shouldn't be able to spend work time talking to friends there should be policies in place that allow you to use it for marketing and connection purposes that are relevant to your role

FB is useful when marketing your site or product. It interferes when you do other jobs like playing online games found on FB. That time it becomes a hindrance.

One reason why employers blocked facebook is lost of productivity and concentration of their subordinates. If they are using facebook as a tool of promoting their site/company services, etc then, they should not block it or set a certain time when employees can freely use it like during break times.

I agree with my_misyel, however even though Facebook can have a place, the majority of people would rather use it as a timewaster so it's not really a clean cut answer.

Well according to my thinking we can use it for both purposes entertainment and marketing.
