Sales Tax

Ok I need some major help. Yes I have owned a biz. before but it was under a partnership, and my biz. partner did all the taxes and sales tax and all that stuff. Now that I am starting to start up my own company by myself, I filed all the paperwork, all but the sales tax and sellers permit application.

How does sales tax work? Do I pay it weekly, monthly, yearly. And do they send me a bill or what? I don't want to get into trouble later on because I forgot to do sales tax and stuff. I need some help with people who have companies in California. I do respect everyones replays, but I need people who already pay sales tax for their companies to reply. I hope you understand. The more details you can give me the better. Thanks to everyone, this site rocks, and has really helped me with a lot.

Thanks.

I'm not sure myself, but I think you pay taxes based on the amount of projected in-state sales you have, which you had to fill in on your application for a tax permit. I believe you have to pay quarterly, and if you sell less or more than your projected sales, you either get a refund when you file your taxes(if you sell less), or you have to pay extra(if you sell more).

Here in Florida my corporation is required to remit sales & use tax monthly. Basically you record your sales total, subtract the amount of exempt sales, and then are taxed on the remainder at the local rate (in addition to any surtax imposed by the county. Here that is .5%).

Sales Tax California

I don't know how much further you have gotten on the Sales Tax. In California they typically start you off on a quarterly basis. They send you a form every quarter. It is pretty simple to fill out. You put in your total sales for the quarter, enter any non-taxable sales, subtract the two, and multiply that amount by your local cities sales tax. This the amount you pay to the state. The Franchise Tax Board holds free classes every month. If you need to get more information contact them. I think they are very useful. Another way of keeping track of your sales tax payable is getting a accounting software. IE QuickBooks by Intuit. It automatically determines how much tax to pay.
