I do agree that these are messed up countries but by giving them money isn't doing them any good in the long run.

"Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him
    for a lifetime."

What needs to change is how we approach to problems. We need to set up industries in these third world countries where people can start to produce for themselves. I do think we should have programs to support them for the time being but it isn't ever going to solve the problem if we don't work to achieve the over all goal of creating working economies so that the people in these emerging third world nations can begin create products for themselves.
“All men dream, but not equally. Those men who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the morning to find it was but vanity, but those men who dream by day-these are the dangerous men, for they dream with open eyes to make their dreams come true.”

I know exactly what you mean, but to start with we need to make sure they survive then we need to help them get back on their feet.

I was reading that in Somalia almost 50% of their population is starving to death. We need to first save them, then teach them!

But how do we do that without sending in the Marines?

I dont think we necessarily need the marines... just an army of selfless volunteers.

Some who will give money for food, and others to help with the distribution.

Once they are being fed, we could then look at why they cant create their own food.

Somalia is a war torn country with different rebel groups. How would we get around these groups and get to the people?

that is a fair point but organisations like world vision are getting in there, so I guess the safest option is to support organisations that can get food it.

However saying that I did just watch a dvd called 'Invisible Children' and 3 young guys that went into Sudan and Uganda in 2001 to create the documentary and that was during war time as well.

But i definately see your point. Maybe united nations should be doing more?

The only way you would ever get the U.N. to get involved would by showing the nations that are involved what benefits they would get from rebuilding countries like Somalia, Uganda and Sudan. If there is nothing in it for them, your not going to get their attention

    interesting stats
the rest of the world aside, poverty in africa has been a thoroughly debated topic, and whilst the consensus is that money alone will never eradicate poverty in that part of the world, I think that it would help create a social environment where the right solutions can take root

now, the thing with money is slightly more interesting...basically, if fortune 1000 companies donated a miserly 1% of their 2007 profits, hypothetically, global poverty would be a historical relic. the problem of course, is to do with lawyers..western jurisprudence on corporate law makes it illegal for companies to make donations. essentially, modern corporate law is based on the principle of shareholder sovereignty...and until this principle is modified by western jurors, funding for the eradication of global poverty will continue to suffer a short fall.
