    Hi Skyhigh007,
    Depending on your needs Open source application can be customizable to suit these needs. Update are mostly based on user or market demands, and not someones idea of what you may need. A lot of Open source application are also multi platformed. As Chriswick explained they are mostly free. There may be a few cons but compared to the pros you will certainly end up better off.
    Why are you considering open source applications?

    Honestly, I've been trying to run 100% open source for my business because of cost and because of wide spread support and integration issues. I still use Photoshop and Quickbooks out of necessity, but there rest is open source for Elevate Printing...

    1. free
    2. usually has a good following - so easy support via forums
    3. usually has a lot of user made addons for free

    Why pay for something that you can get for free?

    Yeah my websites also open source (LAMP)

    "* Linux, referring to the operating system;
    * Apache, the Web server;
    * MySQL, the database management system (or database server);
    * PHP, Perl or Python, the programming languages. " -- LAMP (software bundle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

    WULLY

    Quick books I understand!

    However you can replace PhotoShop with Paint.net

    Great forums, great tutorials and support available. You can constantly add to the base functionality by adding DLL files to the proper directory.

    Hope this helps get you closer to being 90% open source.

    I am using many open source softwares including one that I use for live chat on my site which works great! I also use joomla on one of my sites for the CMS.

    Love it!

    Ahh I have tried open source software -- gimpshop, etc... but the main reason I use Photoshop is for the color management engine. Its literally unmatched in any software. Seeing how I work with professional photographers and artists... color is everything.

    I'll check out paint.net though, thank you.
