    Need Community Input

Two things I want to talk about today, and I want completely honest and open thoughts and opinions.

    1. Is anyone else here dismayed and concerned that a large number of YE posts are obviously inaccurate and unintelligent, and seem to be posted merely to display a signature?

    2. How is my performance as a moderator here? I know I have pissed off quite a few people lately, and I want to hear thoughts on how I am doing, as well as how I can improve.

    Please share...

    I think you're kicking ass

spam is down, but content is an issue

it's not your fault, it's just the nature of the forum

for example: http://www.ibankingoasis.com is an extremely intelligent forum with no spam or blow ins

it's caus to be interested in IB oasis people have to be of a certain age, and to participate in it, people require a specific kind of education/career

here, the nature of the forum makes it attractive to people of all ages, with all kinds of backgrounds (or lack there of)

It comes down to how the forum gets marketed

like http://www.opencoffeeclub.org is also a startup community but the founder has chosen to market it to a very specific audience, which then also attracts a very specific audience and they won't be experiencing the kids of problems that ye has

with communities, there is a self policing mechanism

the members of the community will them selves determine what is and what isn't good content

here; the community tolerates baseless, unauthoritative advice - and so such kind of advice continues to flourish

want to fix this? make the forum exclusive

give it an auro of professionalism with visual aids

and then, the audience will start to change

the younger, less experienced guys will find other places and the quality of the posts will reflect that

if that's what you wanna do....

I think you are doing a great job, by the time i see any form of unintelligent posting, or SPAM, either you or Akula, have already ripped into the poster.

I have been a member of this forum for over 3 years now, somewhat on and off, but I have slowly seen this forum get worse and worse.

I just don't get that people can not do a 30 second search to see if the question they are going to ask has already been answered (which it usually has), and how members cant seem to post into the correct forum topics, people need to use some common sense.

But I have enjoy seeing how you have been trying to clean YE up, and you are doing an excellent job.

    Keep up the good work!

I do see a lot of innaccurate information here, a lot of it coming from people who really think they know the right answer. But that is out of your control, I think you are doing a good job.

    Your doing great.

Your so right alot of the YE posts are obviously inaccurate and unintelligent. I believe they are posted merely to cause disruption on YE.

Keep up the good work, so we can continue to enjoy YE.

Hey you have never "pissed me off" so for that I would say your doing a great job..

I haven't been here very long, but I'd rate your job of moderating to this point as exceeding expectations. Your responsive to requests, questions, and problems as the arise, you let discussion happen when it's civil and appropriate and your opinions are not so strong as to cause conflict.

As for the message board... This is a beginners message board, thus there are going to be a lot of uninformed posts and a lot of wrong information. But really a lot of that is part of the learning process and to be expected.

Content will come as long people that have gone thorugh the trials and learned from the process of trial and error choose to stick around and help new members with their experience. Keeping spam and nusance posters to a minimum goes a long way toward that and lets the sense of community develop to promote things like that.

All in all I've really enjoyed my time here so far.

I would have to agree with nordicnomad. I just joined this forum a few days ago (found it from google rss feed index).
    IMO:
There is some heart weakening spam, as will always be. I think there needs to be more of a obstacle to get on posting, maybe a beginners forum before allowing to post in others. I think its great very young people 12-13-14 login and start posting about things but there needs to be some sort of maturity and classification between groups. As far as I see now, there are the really YE, the moderately YE (17-early 20) and then, the older entrepreneurs that are high 20's to early 30's. Classification and organization between these groups could help.

It needs to have collaboration, and I dont really see a strong community. Yet.

The problem is that I am not a mod.

If I was, spam would not be here

I think there is a shift of profound ideas and thoughts from forums, to blogs. Many of us have a blog (like myself), and instead share our insights and knowledge within the blog instead of the forum. I find myself doing this. I typically would post a new Thread about an interesting link, new servicece, or business tip; now, I instead post it to my blog.

    Its ok

In the summer and fall I would visit ye everyday then something happend when the winter came. I started to notice the content was getting rather weak anemic at times and not worth my time on the site. I was just starting to contribute to the site. Its still a helpful forum but you just have to sift through the garbage.

I enjoy the forums and I think it's the nature of the board (targeting young entrepreneurs) that attracts the naive and clueless. As long as there are dedicated and well-informed participants like akula around the community will be great.

I think a lot of the spam would go away if it weren't so easy to post. I think some sort of tiered accounts or a CAPTCHA might do the trick. If it took a little more effort than cut-and-paste to spam tipidnokia all over the board, it might slow down. Allow regulars a more trusted account without safeguards.
