    Movie Recommendation: Ran

If you're looking for a profound experience this holiday season, don't walk past the narrated version of Kurosawa's dazzling masterpiece.

Really, RAN is an extraordinary phenomena of a movie that surely ranks as cinema's preeminent illustration of mastery.

Then, if you have six hours to kill, you can watch seven samurai and magnificent seven back to back.

    funny you mentioned that

after watching Kurosawa's version, I could only stand to watch half a scene of magnificent seven

compared to seven samurai, i found it unbearably annoying

and not even that; imho, magnificent seven can never hold a candle to even the earlier spaghetti westerns, let alone quentisential Kurosawa

i dunno...I found it a bit forgetful (no pun intended)

for love stories, I'm really down for Casablanca, or even Hitchcock's Vertigo

I thought that was a supremely twisted love story

the business? is there a link?

yeah...I'm finding that old school cinema really does it for me

    pre-70's, I like Leone + Kurosawa
    80's, I like Coppola + Stone + Kubrik + Polanski + Eastwood
90's-now, Spike Lee is OK, some of the old masters have a hit once in a while (i.e. million dollar baby), then there is the one day wonders like Garden State, and other than that, the best thing I've seen from this decade is Iñárritu, but it looks like he has finished his trilogy with Babel, and heaven knows what's next

what I'm saying is, I don't mind this Iñárritu-style, recognizably new age, socio political, didactic cinema like Traffic or what ever (because it's the only bearable kind in a sea of gory shit like Hostel, Saw and Ben Stiller - style slapstick) and I'd really like to see some more good drama from today's new directors

....I'm not seeing any new cinematic auteurs come around over the past 10-20 years

can anyone recommend a young director with a recognizably unique style?

Fair enough. Of course, genius vs. cheap American knockoff isn't really a fair fight.

How about Infernal Affairs vs. The Departed?

Ahh, see you obviously do not have access to the inside track on hot new filmmakers we have over on the sophisticated side of the world.

For instance, between the 20 minutes of commercials and the Fandango advercrap at my local cinema, we are lucky enough to get a sneak preview at fresh hot and brilliant new filmmakers courtesy of the coca cola corporation.

In the latest "short film" we get to see the touching story of a cameraman who is trying to get a shot of two monkeys. They monkeys though, are not cooperating. So, the cameraman uses the coke to attract the monkeys. (Note the existentialism) Then, and this is the kicker, the monkey is filming the cameraman!

I laughed and laughed. Then I cried and cried.

Seriously though. Sundance is just around the corner (Ok, like 10 minutes away). I'll keep you updated if any new talent rears their cute little head.

BTW, I think the most brilliant young filmmaker out there right now is Don Hertzfelt. If you haven't heard of him, check it out. Not while you are eating though. Torent: http://btjunkie.org/torrent?do=downl...e747d3.torrent
