It works just like off line businesses, I think if you tend to do what everyone else is doing - blog, affiliate, advertising etc.. there is only so much of the pie to go around. same as bricks and mortar businesses
Again, to succeed you need to try and find that niche, or thing everyone wants, or something that provides a service, people want things for free online.. so anything free for a user is always good..
The sites that have made decent cash online usually start as start-ups - lastminute.com, facebook, myspace, moneysupermarket.com, they are all free to use, and are turning over 7 figure numbers all the time.
Im not discounting that you cant supplement your daily income via ads, affiliates, blogs etc.. but It would take a lot of work to be able to make a good living from it as a sole form of income.
All these big bloggers have their hands in many other pies, rarely make money just from writing a little blog.
