    List of charities

I am looking to donate and join some charity - however I don't want to join all these big ones like Breast Cancer and such. I want to join something smaller and specific.

Like if there is a charity for the caring of homeless kids in under developed countries or something.

Where can I find a list of formed charities?

I am starting a business soon targeted at the university market. I have a very good idea and plan and everything is going well and I plan big things. One of the things I would like to do, is donate an amount to a given charity and also affiliate with one.

Now there are many charities that I would like to join and feel strongly for - such as homeless children and disadvantaged youth however I ask you if you know of something specific that I could get in contact with.

I want something that in some way university students could relate to - as my product, is a product for university students. When they buy this product, procedings will go the charity. I'll allocated around £3'000 to give to charity for the first year.

I need a charity that students of universities here in England would feel possibly good about - something related to students or studies or success for the future for youngsters.

    Can you recommened any charities?

Shouldn't be hard to find? Did you search for nonprofits in the UK?

If you are looking for specific recommendations in the U.S. I could help you based on your interests. For instance, The only national one I volunteer for is FIRST which is a national (semi-international) organization that promotes science and technology among high school students.

That makes sense Josh, I remember those pictures you posted of you during some trip you went on in college in that space shuttle type of thingie - sorry I'm not the science type hence me saying "thingie"

Yep, I was looking for one that is basically aimed at university or even school students - something for the so called disadvantaged ones who maybe can not afford the fee or are coming from extreme conditions in some way.

Definetely something for disadvantaged youth - broken homes, something on those lines but who have a desire to study or do something. Something on those lines for sure...

I done some searches on Google - I sent an email to the register of charities to see if they can help me too.

I am an Associate Board member for Scholarship Chicago (Scholarship Chicago creates opportunities for economically disadvantaged Chicago-area high school students. College Bound 4541 N. Ravenswood Ave., Ste. 303 Chicago, IL 60640 773.769.6060) which provides mentoring, internships and financial assistance for underpriveleged, overachieving high school students. It's obviously only based in Chicago, but you can see if something similiar exists where you are.

idealist.org has directory of charity and non-profit organizations. You can look into their list online.

There is an entrepreneur in Chicago who has a website that lists nonprofit events on a calendar for free to promote the nonprofits to people looking to get involved.

In addition, there are organizations like YNPN - Young Nonprofit Professionals Network, which allows people interested in nonprofits to network and help eachother out.

I'm too lazy to search now and I'm working at the moment, but are there any social networking sites for nonprofits? I know facebook has some apps for this, but is there any social networking site revolving around the nonprofit world?
If not, I'll go create one

edit: I found change.org but its not nearly the same thing I am conceptualizing right now.

Charity Navigator - America's Largest Charity Evaluator | Home
Donate Money to Charity - Charitable Giving - Donate Now - Charity Gift Certificates - Charity Wedding Registry

I make a living doing fundraising for charities all across the US. I would recommend you do your homework before donating. Many organizations do not use their money wisely. As an example United Way only uses 3%* of their donations to actually fund programs where as the Salvation Army can run as high as 80%*
*depending on the fundraising venture and the program it is connected too

I saw that you mentioned that you would like to help poor or disadvantaged children. There is an organization out of Long Island, NY called Feel Better Kids Feel Better Kids :: Home that helps to provide medical care to children when government sponsored programs fall short.

What ever you do please do your homework. It great that you want to help, just make sure that if you are going to be continually giving that the money is being properly used. If you are going to build an on going relationship you could even request expenses itemization so that you can see exactly where your money goes. If you have any questions please feel free to send them over.
