Smile is schooling the opiate of society?

hi friends

long time reader, first time poster.

I've been reading a lot about successful entrepeneurs lately and it seems that every quality that they embody like bravado, innovative thinking, experience, intense curiosity, drive, and all that other good stuff that all people should be going for is being destroyed in the school system. When I sit in a classroom and I see a bunch of students passively staring at their instructor as he prompts them on when to turn the page, which diagram to look at, which terms to memorize, and how to wipe their ass... I can't help but think that this kind of environment is the total antithesis to what an entrepeneur needs?

I take a look around and I'm surrounded by people literally drooling on themselves, who maintain their sanity by bringing a laptop to lectures and surfing facebook. For them to put up with 4 years of this sorta makes me think these people will be perfect employees.

Does anyone else feel that school is just a crutch, and that if you have literacy skills you should be going out to read bestseller books yourself as opposed to going to uni or college to have some douchebag professor show you power point slides instead?

Well all depends on the school you attend and the knowledge of the professors....
I've had instructors who started Fortune 500 companies..... these courses are extremely valuable.

But school systems generally prepare students to work for someone else.

Do you think school can also keep someone in a state of arrested development?

If you've been a longtime reader then you know that the subject has been beat to death.

Perhaps your attitude is a case of perception becoming reality. In the end, what you get out of college is up to you. If you want to be part of the masses procrastinating life because mommy and daddy are paying for it, so be it.

If you take that as a personal attack you need school more than you realize.

If you're the type of person who conforms like that, you never would have made it in entrepreneurship anyway. Successful entrepreneurs have personalities that prevent such conformity, that make them take risks, that make them question the status quo, that make them learn what is applicable in the classroom and then apply it to their own entrepreneurial ventures. I don't think a formal education destroys entrepreneurship, but rather weeds out those who want to call themselves "entrepreneurs" from those who really ARE true entrepreneurs.

I don't think the first comment was a personal attack, but this one definitely sounds like one.

Let's get back to the subject, ladies and gentleman. Let's discuss ideas and problems and issues rather than people. Let's talk about whether formal education can beat the entrepreneur out of someone.

School won't beat an entrepreneur out of someone. Only that someone can do it to themself. It doesn't matter if you get a college degree or not...you can be a successful entrepreneur either way. School can help you become more well-rounded though...but if you have read a book called Think and Grow Rich, you'll also know that Ford and Edison became masively successful without the higher education system...Gates too for that matter. My mentor Jim Rohn says...formal education will make you a living...but self education will make you a fortune! They don't teach you wealth and creativity in school...that's something you have to learn from other successful people...experiences...and something that comes from passion and desire. I may be off topic...but I assume that entrepreneurs are in it to become financially successful...not just to be creative.

having done the whole uni thing, i'm openly prejudice against those that haven't...it's not really about skills, but more about parity

i mean, wtf, would I date a chic without a degree? hell no. would I do business/work with a college drop out? I haven't thus far, and i doubt i will.

I don't think you wanna be in a position where people are gonna discriminate against you
