iphones and g1s just internet devices?

voip on our present carriers will more than likely be pretty bad, but over time that will get better.
when that time comes, do you think it is true that our cellphone devices will eventually become internet devices. on the g1, gchat offers a far better solution for texting, not only is it quicker but i find it easier to communicate. everyone has a gmail account dont they?. im not sure where i heard this but in japan people communicate through email, there is no more need for texting. if carriers dont have minutes or texts to provide, arent they just left with providing service?

yes, I think this is very scary for the carriers because about 50-60% of the phonebill is the minutes/txt portion.

Is there any other articles on how the phone companies are planning for this situation?

Things are changing, it will be interesting if the voice/txt plans become obselete in 2-3 years
