    Internet as potential selling tool

Small businesses can improve their sales through selling through the internet. For instance, 56% of small businesses say they use the internet to purchase supplies. That still has room for growth.

Yes, the Internet still has plenty of room for growth.

I'm sure I am stating the obvious here, but the internet has grown to be the most powerful marketing tool for companies today. By not having your business online, you are giving way to your competitors who do. Thus, missing out on all that business potential.

The Internet opens possibilities for new marketing domains - you can get customers on an international scale. eBay, for example, launched 'direct buyer' (in some regions) initiative so that people can use credit cards in local currencies to order items from sellers in the U.S.

Most of the businesses that are benefiting through the use of the Internet are small and medium sized; you can see that on the shopping sites - most of those listed are in this category, or those who make an income from home, are small entrepreneurs.

How do you feel about the effectiveness of online marketing in creating new business? Is it as effective as word-of-mouth?

I would say yes. Larger audience. How can you depend on word of mouth for your product if there are no mouths to spread it? You have to get it out there first.

Most companies are finding it important to have an online marketing initiative. While traditional methods (newspapers, yellow pages, etc.) have their place as there are people who use them, the lack of online presence (now even newspapers, yellow pages, TV and radio networks are online) will limit the chances of finding a large customer base and thereby the possibilities of opportunity are less.

Any business that can and does not take advantage of the Internet as a marketing tool is missing out a great deal, what an amazing thing to be able to do to reach a worldwide audience at the click of a mouse! Say if a customer is searching for information on a product or service, I would say that they are more likely to go for the one that they can easily find info about on the Internet. Forums and blogs provide a great way to spread word of mouth, however, this of course can go wrong and negative comments can spread like wildfire. This could obviously happen even if your business is not taking advantage of the online world for marketing.

I fully agree with you. That's why it is necessary for businesses to devise a good Internet marketing strategy as well as positive reputation with their clients.
