How to get Media attention for your company?

I've been trying to get some articles and general media attention for a new software product my company has developed for retail clothing stores. I've been marginally successful in my view, and would like more media coverage, i mean who wouldnt!

So i always see posts about SEO and other tips i thought why not a Media or PR tips thread.

Share some tips and tricks for getting PR and media attention. Maybe we can help those looking to fill their blogs with new posts

I'll share what i've known to work.

-Attend trade shows, i've gotten a few blurbs in big news papers just b/c i was at a trade show and someone was covering it and i sought out the reporter

-Email writers from businessweek, WSJ, trade publications...where ever you want to be published, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt

-local publications are always looking for articles, if your service is doing something new and exciting they always need material

maybe you can share with us what's your current conversion rate, cost & ROI based on your current effort..
then we can help improve this rate, or even try other means of leads generation

If you do some sort of media coverage, make sure it is a one time deal which gives you immediate turnover. Do not go for people who tell you that you'll need to structurally do marketing, at least not for now.

What you'd ideally want is for example an ad that says '25% off if you react using code blablabla'. This ad would of course have to be in a magazine that targets your audience.

I had incredible media exposure using a good old fashioned press release that I wrote myself for my bricks and mortar retail store (now closed).

I whipped up a well written press release and emailed it to two local newspapers. One called within 20 minutes and sent a reporter and photographer the same week. They did a full page write up.

The second one didn't respond and six months later I sent it again and they called immediately asking why I hadn't sent it sooner. Grrr. They too wrote a full page article with lots of pics.

From those two articles several other newspapers picked up the "story" and wrote their own articles. This went on for a full year from one little press release! And I had no special story or store. It was a little children's resale franchise.

I also sent it to PRweb.com and a television station called wanting to feature the franchise in a tv show.

All that publicity for FREE! (Except PRweb cost $35.)

Do something positive! Host an event for the unfortunate or an environmental event. When it comes to doing something positive the media is on that coverage like white on rice. After you get the media to come to the event you slip the business in like it is the brains behind the whole event and your sure to get a great article. It has worked for me. Good Luck!

Join social networks or forums about your niche and share them your stories or hire a writer to review your products and blog about it.

I wonder if you might want to share about the press release that you had written..

I am unsure about others but I will like to learn what & how you had written it so much so that you got almost immediate response..

    Thank you..

I took direction from a little book called Six Steps to Free Publicity by Marcia Yudkin (I feature it in my website here Small Business Startup - Recommended Products scroll down).

Even though there was nothing exciting or special about my business, the press release was well written. I made it interesting by throwing in some "quotes" by me and quotes I took from the franchisor's info from their website.

It's not difficult at all to do yourself.
