Getting "Work" Done at Home...

Do any of you fellow entrepreneurs have difficulty getting things done that you need to get done? For example, are distractions and the environment of your home a bad place to work?

For me, one particular distraction is the kitchen. Yes, the almighty stove, microwave overn, and refrigerator cater my love for food and takes time away from getting things accomplished.

My current budget doesn't allow me to rent office space, like an exective office suite from The Regus Group or HQ Global Workplaces. Having an office away from the house would be an answer to many of these productivity problems I experience at home.

So what do I do? I find that taking my laptop and soft briefcase to the public library or a local Starbucks to get work done is the solution. There are no distractions of the kitchen, no constant phone ringing, the television, or the biggest distraction of all - just being plain too comfortable at home.

So, what's easier for you? Working at home, an office, or some other environment?

for me it helps to set goals, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly...you get the point. I make them on a set timeframe and make them SMART specific measureable attainable realistic and time based. For me that helps since i want so badly to crumble up the stupid post-it note i wrote it on that it drives me to work. Also i would reccomend either working in another room with less distractions or get someone who will bugg you to do work

It sounds to me like you are being held back by using a psychologically fabricated planning model, the unnatural planning model.

To get things done efficiently and effectively and to get rid of such distractions you need to have your thought processes put into an external and trusted system so that you can focus on one thing at a time without other things interfering. You may have a calendar or weekly/monthly planner, or post-it notes or what have you. However, most planning and organization models are insufficient. They key is not that you trust your planning model, but that your mind does. You know when that will happen when you can think clearly and focus only on what you need to focus on.

Always ask yourself what the next action is.
To organize the different chores and thought processes coming up in your life use the 5 D's.

Do it
Delegate It
Defer it
or
Drop It.

You need to get your head back into the game. Life has brought us up, and more importantly, our teachers in elementary, high school middle school and college have taught us to use an inappropriate and unnatural planning model that goes against the way out mind operates. Its like trying to put sand in a bucket using a rake instead of a shovel.

The natural planning model is 5 simple steps:

1. Defining purpose and principles
2. Outcome visioning
3. Brainstorming
5. Identifying next actions.

I highly suggest you read Getting Things Done by David Allen. You will be able to work anywhere effectively and get things done more efficiently. You will also be able to think up more innovative and creative ideas more easily.

I also suggest you ignore any suggestions to make a Daily To-Do list.

Unless I really need it...I turn off the internet and move the modem into a cupboard. I also lock the door to other rooms in the house. Although, I don't have that much real work to do at the moment (school has finished for the summer...and I am taking the next 2 years to do my business plan, financial plan and marketing plan so when I am 16 I am ready to go straight away). But when am doing coursework, I find it really helps...also, don't answer calls on home only stuff (just answer business) unless it is really important (like family) just call them back at your break (then get the modem out and do some surfing during your break)

I prefer working from home, despite the fact that i also get distracted very often. I do not like commuting to an office and working there for several hours. Ya, working at a public library is a very good idea. However, if your work requires making of phone calls, there arises the problem. If something is done about that then nothing like working at a public library. Good luck.

i like to work at my room.. but sometimes when doing assignment i will do it at the campus especially at my faculty building..

while i also keep my Google Calendar uptodate
