    Question Getting started

I'm new to contracted website development and am unsure what to charge for an hourly rate. I was recently asked to do some contract development work for a company I used to work for. In fact, I was a part of the team that overhauled and rebulit the website as it is known today. I will be required to write original text regarding product and services advertised on the site as well as resize and upload product photos. I know it's a bit sophmoric but everyone has to start somewhere. My eventual goal is to become a full-time independent contractor in web development. I know I have a long way to go but this small project is just the thing to get me off the ground while I bulk up on my skills. Could anyone help me determine the hourly rate? I imagine the project will take anywhere from 30-40 hrs.

A lot of good developers that I have worked with charge $80-$120/hour. Some firms charge more than that and some charge less. Some just charge a per project rate.

Look at what your competition is charging.......this should give you an idea and provide ammunition if your client tries to lowball you. Ideally, you would want to charge per job vs. per hour. This way you can be rewarded for efficiently using your time, and the client has a set amount he will pay for a completed project.

Well what one should charge depends from person to person. Several factors effect your decision...

    1) Your Skills
    2) Your Experience
    3) Level of Competition
    4) Your infrastructural Costs
    5) Cost Structure in the Region where you are located
    6) What amount of Profit will make you happy

    etc. etc.

So Best will be to see what your competitors who are located near you charge in such instances and then decide accordingly.

Charge by project basis. You will have more headache to convince the numbers of hours you work than you do if you charge per project.
