I have a free e-book I think people, lots of people, would benefit from but I'm unsure as to the best way to get the word out there...any suggestions?

There are several places you can make it available.
Have you considered putting it up on LuLu?
The PDF version can be free, and people can buy it as an actual printed book as well.

In any case, it's hard to tell you what the best promotional opportunity is when we don't know what niche it's in. For all I know about it, 4chan could be the best place for it.

A great way to get your ebook promoted is through a review by a blog. This helps because it can get you clients right away, because people can really trust the authors and it provides real SEO power, since blogs are very flexible with keywords/links and search engines love them. Not only that, its really inexpensive, usually starts around $25 per review.

If it's a really good ebook then you should make a simple website for it. Then promote your ebook everywhere you can and link back to your website so people can buy it directly from your site. You can sell it on eBay as well.
