    dropping out of college

    hey all...

im 17, at the moment all i wanna do is quit college, and work full time, whilst investing the money i make... but every one keeps telling me that education is the key, and if i do pass exams and stuff it will please my parents, which is what i want... but i also just want to throw in the towel and just GET OUT AND MAKE MONEY...

seriously i am going nuts.. especially because exams are coming up and im stressing about them... if i fail them then ill defintely quit education, if i pass ill do another year of education to go onto university staight after...

the only thing thats stopping me from my entreprenurial dream is, my full time education, and the only thing that is going to guarantee a higher pay in the future is my full time education so im trapped...

if i do pass i want to run a business, and if i fail i still want to run my own business. so is it worth it for me to carry on college...

is anyone else on this forum feeling like this?

yes, everyone goes on and on about how important education is. You know what I do, I shrug them off and say yeah yeah whatever, because I know their not entrepreneurs, they follow what the world sais, thats why they'll never be rich. Dont listen to other people who dont have a reputable background to tell you what to do.

I started having the same feelings as you towards my 3rd year of college. I just stuck it out because i was so close to finishing that it didn't really matter. Plus my grandma would've beat me to death

What are you majoring in? The flaw i see in college education is that it trains you for a job. That's fine with 95% of the world, but obviously for people on this forum, a 9-5 is not what we are looking for. If you feel your college education will not teach you the skills in the field that you would love to work in, then i agree you are wasting your time.

On the other hand, if your college education will guarantee you skills that will get you a better paying job, giving you more money to invest in the long run, you might as well stick it out and work on your business in your free time during college.

from the uk it goes like this

from age 11 to 14 is high school

from age 15 to 18 is college

    from 18+ is university

Im in college at the moment

the way i see it is... education is only important for things where grades matter more then experience when applying for jobs, so employers know that you have trained from a reputable source (the countries colleges and universities)... these jobs are like doctors and lawyers etc... which i have no interest in these 9-5 crap... im just interested in making money....where the potentiol is sky high

in the world of business it is easier for a person to start a business, or get a job according to his experience rather then his grades...

and thats all i want to do Business/sales ENTREPRENUER stuff...

i dont even know where im going with my education to be honest, i dont know what i want to be, im not like all these other kids in college who know exactly what they want, i just know i want money

Maybe you should consider a entrepreneur degree where you learn to source funds and write business plans etc?

Im sure there will be some in the UK somewhere?

    1. its not called high school its secondary school
    2. secondary school is from 11 to 18 (as 6th form is included in this which is where students do a levels to gain access to university)

Im doing business at uni after summer because im good at it, mind u im good at alot of things, A's across the board for me This is just a backup it will allow me to get a fairly high paying job (in comparison to most normal jobs) which i can use as startup capital for a business if its needed which i feel is very important, it also allows me to get a job again with the qualifications if for some weird reason a business of mine fails, which is always good to have.

@F360: there is Business Management (im doing this) which covers the things your talking about including all aspects such as marketing, finances, economics, there are also more targeted versions of this which concentrate on particular part of business more than others.

To be honest I would stay in in school and finish your exams and get a full time job 9-5 after, but in the mean time run your own business part-time.

This way you learn to run the business without rushing into it and loosing a lot of money (speaking from experience). The worst thing you can do is rush into opening a business thinking you are going to make loads of money straight away.

And no one ever succeds at their first or second attempt at a business it is normally their 3rd eg Richard Branson, he failed about 3-4 times when he was about 16-18 setting up businesses but look at him now. So keeping a full time job to raise capital and as a backup if the business does fall through is a good idea until you are making proper money from the business.

go to school and get a degree.

use school to make connections. and use school to get internships. for some, they choose the wrong major that doesn't drive their entrepreneural spirit.

get internships and valuable work experience. use it for your entrepreneural endeavors.

then again, i'm no professional... so take my advice with a grain of salt.

from what i understand your doing your a levels and in the first year

this is what you should do, complete your education to A level standard so you have a good base if any thing goes wrong. once you have done this you should take a gap year and work full time. this will give you an idea if full time work is for you at this stage.

if you enjoy work then go for it otherwise you can go to uni and you have your a levels to do that.

don't drop out at this stage of your education

It all depends what you want to do. I'm a law student and one of the firms I got offerred a summer placement at, the senior partnersd each earn £1.3 million a year and are worth £15 million! Not bad if you ask me.

A point that I noticed akula mention is that to be a CEO these days you need an MBA.

So if you want to be able to run and control the direction of the company you founded (when it becomes big), then an MBA is a good thing to have if you want to be the (co)owner/CEO.

    Am I right Daniel?

... Although then, if you don't want to be CEO and just be the founder then that's fine. I'd suggest prove that you can startup a successful business while in uni and if it gets to the point where you need to devote more time to it, then defer uni.

    btw, in Aus, uni=university; which=college=tertiary studies=degrees etc

    cheers

I am like you, I am 19 and have big business ambitions but am staying in university because you should always have a backup.

Not to mention, lenders, investors, banks and clients will take you more seriously if you have qualifications. It shows you are disciplined, hard work and an achiever.

Keep you ideas going whilst also studying. Good luck.
    Kind Regards,

    Khalid.
