Post College Majors

So I'm thinking of majoring in business but what would be the best majors/minors for a computer nerd who wants to learn business and do something with business in life?

I was thinking:
- Accounting
- Marketing
- Business

I'm going to be going to a community college first, so any ideas on where to start with that would be great also.

You know, you asked a great question.

I will tell you my personal answer, and I would also recommend you to go to an counselor at the college NOT the high school you are in.

I am 19, Sophomore at FIU (Florida International University) with a major in Management (because it was the Only way I could get a minor/track in entrepreneurship). I am also minoring in Economics and Environmental Science.

I started www.Hotentrepreneur.com , I guess you could say it competes with this site, but I would also tell you that the information I am uploading to my site is better and uselful for young entrepreneurs like you and I to use to start their own venture.

I think you need to think about what you have a passion for, and make sure you are clear.

I am going to give you and example how I f@@@ up for some time when I was confused.

I was studying architecture at my school becuase I have this passion for desining and building things. At the time, I was still working on my minor in economics but not the others. I though that Architecture was that thing for me, it gave me freedom to show creactivity, and stuff like that.

But one day in June 2005 (this last summer) I was working at 2am building a model for the next day, I was tired as hell and I started to think....

This is what I thought, (and I will always remember this day):
"I spend a few hours reading Starting Something and I learned a lot of things from it, and I am not learning jack from this thing, and it's taking me long like hell"

At that moment I notised that I was studing the wrong thing, I also noticed that I could start and grow a business... and that's like the design dream I had to build things.

So today I am working on those business, all of them are online business.

Here are some:

www.animegig.com
www.universityalbum.com
www.hotentrepreneur.com

and others... they are all growing... hope this helps you

From my experience....

Unless you plan on going to grad school or getting an MBA, I would avoid a management major (it would be a good minor though). It is very difficult to do much with it upon graduating. I majored in finance, but if I were you I would major in something more closely related to your computer interests. Marketing will provide some outlets for your computer creativity, but you might want to get a strictly computer-oriented major and stick with a business mgmt or marketing minor. My University had a Business information and operations management major that you may have liked.

Just my 2 cents.

...and, upon graduating, if you can display to your potential hirers that your primary focus is business, but you are a computer genious...it will help you a ton in landing that first job.
