Lightbulb Are you being selfish if you dont want to be rich?

Hey guys.

I have been thinking about this for a while now, and have written probably my longest blog post looking at 4 things people say about why they don't want to be rich.

And what I have done is analyzed each of these and shown how in most cases these people are actually being quite selfish.

The article is here: Stop Being Selfish...And Get Rich!

What do you all think about the subject? Would love to hear your opinions...

Great points, I dont totally agree with a few of them. But your are right. People that say things like that, generally, don't want to move up in the world. It may be from getting used to the scheduled life of working 9-5. Some people just want to come home from work and relax or take care of personal issues. It really takes a lot for that everyday Joe to move up in the business world. Lets face it, it takes a lot of time to start and run your own business. If you are working 9-5, 56 hour weeks, you might shy away from starting your own business on the side. Great article Tom, it got my thinking

I don't think that it is selfishness, it is stupidy. Anyone who thinks that it is OK to spend 8-10 hours a day at job is dead stupid. These people think that they will never die.

Yeah, its crazy. People should always strive to be rich someday..to me working a 9-5 job isnt enough. I know its not 100% realistic for most people to become rich but if you don't try..then whats the point!

I remember reading a good write-up during the dot com days....the head of eBay and other big internet gurus were asked when they know they are rich and can take a break....was it options, money in the bank, salary, etc.....

The idea was there was so many ways to value your wealth.....but you only knew if you were "rich" if you got the amount of sleep you wanted :-) because you might have millions, but if you were always working and doing things, then you were not "rich enough" because you did not have enough control in your life to set your own rules. anyway...it was an interesting take on how you know if you have finally made it :-)

Hi,

Interesting read, i would say you are correct when looking at each point from a capitalists view In my personal experience i can see why people say these things. People strive harder than others in different areas of life and having job satisfaction, a decent salary and time to enjoy life is worth more to them than striving to make as much money as they can. If you attach money to happiness you will always be trying to get more and more to appease that inner demon inside.

In saying this i work 60 -70 hours each week running a web hosting company with one of my best friends and i can say without a doubt that money isn't everything, i am happy when our customers are happy. The quality of life and freedom i get from my job is enough for me to strive to keep them happy. Would i like more money? Sure i would but that is a follow on effect of being successful and being successful at what i do is the goal, it's not obtain as much personal wealth as i can. Does money bring more problems? Well the more you have the more you spend and it really boils down to whether or not money will change you as person.

The question that i can raise from your article is, is it really us being selfish by wanting to be rich?

Would love to discuss this more with you!!

I not talking rich as in working 60-80 hours a week. I am talking about building pipelines of passive income to free up time to do more important things.

but that is an interesting point you raise.

Good point! But most non-entrepreneurs don't think that way.
