I could be wrong with the intent and purpose of the company, but I am sure that Richard Branson uses Good to Great as a level under his coffee table.
I would think you'd be wrong about Branson, too. Does Virgin Records try to fly people to the moon? Does Virgin Airlines try to setup music stores and work with artists to create albums? I'd think not. Each Virgin brand is pinpointed toward a singular goal -- being the best... record company / airlines / space-trip flying company, etc. Perhaps the overall Virgin company is striding to be the best at creating other Virgin companies that in turn become the best at whatever they want to do?

I didn't say there was any harm in branching into different industries, that's why I said call it a spinoff. It's a completely unrelated business.

Anyways...

Ok check it out...if he wants to sell these printing products, just as a side thing because he has a great printing connection - and he actually wants to report the income, he needs to have it done under a legal business name. You can't advertise some other name that you don't have rights/license to. "A division of paws up pet supply" makes it clear that he's operating under the same license.

Sure he could have called it "Whammy Printing a division of PUPS" - but why even go that far? He's just trying to give people some good prices on printing, not start a printing company.

You would discover one of the items he lists as taking a company from Good to Great is focusing on the center point of their three circles. One circle is "What can we be the best in the world at?" Another way to look at this is not diversifying -- focusing only on that one thing the company can simply become great at.

I would encourage you to visit Jim's site and look around, maybe even pick up the book and get more business education. It never hurts, right?

Pet supplies and printing business cards for online friends -- I see absolutely no relation. Two completely seperate circles. I could be wrong, I don't know the details. All in all, that is my opinion. Take it or leave it.
Perhaps you are reading into the idea too much? Collins is one of thousands of business book authors. His opinion and ideas are just his and what has worked for some business, but not all. Although, I have heard great reviews about this book and I have it on my bookshelf, I have not had the chance to read it yet.

But there are many different businesses that have started with selling one product and then branched off and been successful in other industries and made the overall company successful. Some of those businesses even become conglomerates. For example, GE who started out in industrial equipment supplies went into a leasing and renting business. Now GE has a successful financing sector which works like a VC. Another example is Time Warner who was focused on media (tv, movies, etc) and merged with AOL making it a conglomerate.

There is nothing wrong with branching a company out into different industries. And like Eric said, you will need some way of reporting your income generated from it, so why not just run it through your already registered business?

The printing side of the business started with offering our affiliates a cheap printing service. I am now offering it to YE people. This is no business venture nor is it legally a division of Paws Up. Its just a resource i have so i am using it.

Thats all it is - plain and simple. Stop looking so deep into this.

If you are such a smart entrepreneur tell us about what you do and your ventures, etc.

Im sure your a smart guy - but its hard to gain respect on here or any forum if people dont know who you are.
