This was our experience as well....Had a forum, lots of work to maintain, and closed it down due to enormous amounts of spam. Not talking about spam that is borderline rule breakers, but hundreds of pharmaceuticals posts a week if you get what I'm saying. With out a large moderator pool to keep that junk off the site it's hard to keep up. We used phpbb software so perhaps this isn't such problem with vBulletin

Did you install any of the anti spam plugins? Our site is running itself and only receives 1 spam post a week roughly mainly due to the fact we've added alot of features to stop spam

I own a vBulletin forum, and it came equipped with reCAPTCHA. It really works great at controlling spam. Granted, my forum is only three weeks old, but so far, so good.

Bots get through reCAPTCHA with no problem at all. You need to put in protection against bot signups. For example, if a user fills in the registration form in less than 5 seconds, chances are it's a bot, so you can block them from registering. I had a few other things implemented on my forum, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Like I said, I haven't had any problems, so far.

what's the topic of your form? There's definitely some upkeep but it's usually not a big deal until you're getting large amounts of traffic to your forum.

I was using phpbb too. There were a lot of spammers from adult sites also. I added the requirement for email acknowledgement during registration, but it doesn't help. I banned a series of ip, and it doesn't help too. These spammers keep coming back till a point I decided to close down the forum. Really hate these spammers.
