I think people who call themselves entrepreneurs are more concerned about providing innovation and value to society (I'm alluding to Drucker). When you do that in the right way, money will come to you. Definitely, I have my eyes on the money, and it's all about maximizing profit and capitalizing on opportunity, but if you're not offering something of value, then you're just making it more difficult on yourself.
|
Obviously, I don’t share your altruistic views, but I think you're really kidding yourself here if you truly believe that the majority of entrepreneurs are concerned with creating value and contributing to society. Value is needed in a product/service in order to generate revenue.
Revenues, jobs, taxes, these are a company's contributions.

By the way, I'm sure people on this forum have made a lot of money. By thinking they haven't you're only closing your mind off to the possibilities.

Who is this directed to? where did I question whether people on this site made money???

Everyone of my business owner friends are all driven by money and making a lot of it. I'm going to have to agree with Cole Taylor.
Sure, I'm sure there are some people out there who want to be entrepreneurs to make something to benefit society, but if thats the case, then why not work a job and sell the product that does society such good for cost?

Well I guess it depends on your definition of an entrepreneur then, and that's obviously subjective. I disagree with an entrepreneur contributing through jobs. If the goal is maximum profit, you should make as few jobs as possible.
But overall, my point was, sure you can make plenty of money by focusing only on the money, but what separates the millionaires/billionaires, from small-time players is value. If you look at anyone who's made in the millions, they're adding value in some way. You can't get out more than you put in, so you have to add value in some way. Taxes only apply in certain countries. Sure, in the US we have taxes, but there aren't taxes in some countries. Such as Dubai for example. And that's not some 3rd world country, it's one of the hottest places on earth for billionaires everywhere.
But to be honest, I'm not ashamed of saying I love money, and that it motivates me. It does, but I can't see how you could really make a huge profit without somehow providing value.
Even Pet Rocks, if you look at it, they're pets without all the hassle of an ordinary pet. So technically, definition of 'value' is subjective. You might think it's crap, but it could be valuable to someone else...you know that old saying, "one man's junk...
So perhaps we just disagree on the definition of value.
That last statement was directed at pboychuk actually, sorry I didn't specify.

This thread makes me laugh. A lot of BS and personal opinions. Here is a guaranteed formula for success. Work this and you’ll never go hungry…
Educate… work… repeat process

Count me in as one that goes against everything you just stated. Personally, I could care less about the challenge and ONLY care about the score; that is, the money.
I've said it before and say I'll say it again, If I could make a million dollars selling crap on a stick guess what I'd be doing tomorrow?

that's the attitude I have, you want to make money! Even the headline on the top of the page goes along with that - Entrepreneur is used to refer to anyone who undertakes the organization and management of an enterprise involving independence and risk as well as the opportunity for profit.
doesn't say anything about being nice to people

Both Ron and Cole are correct.
Whatever it is that you want, if you want it 'nuff you'll get it.
There's Bill Gates who wanted to introduce the world to computers, he did so and built a 60 billion dollar fortune in the process. Then there are the Russian (and other) billionaires who's main priorities were money, and they conquered just that with 30 bil+ fortunes through such industry's as oil, real-estate and etc.

I wouldn't personally argue with 30billion would you?
also that Bill Gates arguably sold out for stopping the world having decent computers
