Question What are the steps to getting my site to show on search engines

I am almost ready to launch my site. When I do I want people to see my site when they do a search on google. Do I just pay google monthly or something? If so how and how much? And/or is there another way to achieve top spots?

You have two possibilties: You either use PPC model where you pay for the visitors for Google using Adwords program or you do SEO. The price you pay for each visitor depends how competitive those keywords are you are bidding. Usually something $2 range.
To do SEO, you need to get your site Titles, ALT texts, Inner links anchors, etc right and then you start a link building campaign. I could help you with SEO, so PM me if interested.

Watch when using Google Adwords though. Make sure you set a budget; else you could end up with a very BIG bill at the end of the month. Adwords will send you all the traffic you want, but you'll pay for it with every click (whether the web site visitors makes a purchase or not).
You definitely want to submit the site for free through Google/Bing/etc. so it can also have a chance of being found through the use of normal searches by web surfers...

Use this to get your site on google:
    Add your URL to Google

Then there is a very complex system to getting your website to the top of searches.

The process is called SEO (Search Engine Optimization). The best idea is to hire a proven successful SEO or marketing company to do this for you.

Some may suggest that you do it yourself, which you can. The process will be long.

    Good Luck,

There is a lot more to it that just creating some backlinks. You need to get with someone or read about how to optimize your pages. Google also has a SEO starter guide that they offer that you can read. It will provide you with the tools that you need to do it yourself. The key to SEO is that is a marathon and not a quick sprint. It is something that you work at everyday. If you have the time then go for it, if not, look into hiring someone that can take care of it for you.
