I have used press releases and they work like a champ.

But you have to not make them sound like spam or a promotion, this will even get your deleted.

I use

1) webwire.com

and

2) prWeb.com

They are not cheap, but if you get a high quality press writer out there to help you, you can see massive results.

We always get increse of traffic and sales when we do this.

But You have to be creative and have an edge. Post something that will get lots of media attention and has a chance of going viral. We did this back in 2009 and broke our bandwith on our site. LOL. that is a good thing. Means we did the job properly.
