I need something to create an e-commerce site for.

I want to setup an online store so that I can familiarize myself with setting up shopping cart software. However I don't have anything to sell and don't really want to be stuck with a drop-ship business when I'm done. I also would like to avoid the monthly fees of a merchant account and some drop-ship wholesalers. I am very technical and have a strong background in web design. Any suggestions as to what to do with a $6,000 web site I plan to not want?

I'm a bit confused by your wording at the end..."plan to not want". Were you always planning to "not want it"? Were you planning on flipping it? Or are you saying that IF you run out of ideas, then what do you do?

Regarding your first issue, where you aren't too sure on what to sell, why not do some keyword research? Use Google's keyword research tool, Google Trends, and some SEO research tools on SEOMOZ.org and just start plugging in some search terms for different industries. Look for where there is a lot of demand. If you can find a lot of demand with little competition, this is a big plus. You can always look for where there is a lot of demand and niche down a bit so there wont be nearly as much competition.

Confused about your last sentence. You can start your online business with low cost retailing.

Basically I want to build an e-commerce site for the experience, putting it in my portfolio, and so I can know what goes into it (and thus give customers a price). However I don't have any purpose for it. After I build an e-commerce site (with undetermined products) I don't really want to take the time to manage and run it. I know how to advertise & promote it, but I don't really want to run a store. I'm not sure how well such a store would sell.

So I really have two problems.
    1) What do I put in it? (I may be able to find a drop shipper.)
    2) What do I do with the store after I'm done with it? (A store with no customers and an apathetic owner won't do very well no matter how low it's expenses.)

Here is what you do you get with a dropshipper build the site and then sell it I know tons of people that would love to buy a store already set up with products
check out my link they give you free e-commerce templates they also have a community forum so if you were a member you could post your site for sell and I am sure it would go in days you could actually if you wanted make quite a bit of money setting people up with stores already made.

Create an affiliate site. You make commissions with no overhead except advertising and hosting costs
