I'd like to give some advice to these so-called up and coming artists- DONT EVER DO ANYTHING FOR FREE. By doing that you are lowering thre salaries for all artists.

if you actually value your so-called skills you would know that they are worth something(maybe not much if you're willing to do free work). this is aimed squarely at "satellite1". I don't know you personally, but I feel for you, dude.

I'm a 6+ year design professional- and It's bad enough that many companies do not value the artists that work for them as an asset. I got lowballed on a 10 dollar an hour job one time. I was like "good writtens". You have many compananies, especially the new jacks who arent worth much and have crappy clients anyways, always posting on boards about looking for artists for exposure. F*ck that. amke a nice business card, website, nad make soem postcards and mail them out, stick em up, whatever u have to. use your "free" time wisely. But be true to yourself. If you design is so -so(or pretty wack), take some classes, study what good design is. Everyone has to learn.

If you need a showpiece, just do good work. When people like your ability, when you can show it on your site or book people may pick up on it. or they wont. That's the game. Take the time that you are doing free work with and build a nice book. Here's a hint: Take something from a popular company (like an ad) and make it look "better". When you show it to people thwy will assume you have worked for big clients- first impression is everything. when they are wowed you hit them with the "i did that just for research". beleive me, it works wonders.

Don't ever listen to someone that says to not do something for free. Free is the BEST, easiest, and cheapest way to get people talking about your product/service. For example, free samples at supermarkets, free test drives at auto dealer, free Gillette razors on your 16th/18th birthday.

Sure if you are a well established company maybe you can get away with paying the big bucks to advertise your company. But all it takes to advertise when you are small is time when you are serviced based. Costs nothing else.

Dont ever listen to soemone who compares putting your book together to free supermarket samples. If you are going to dispute my point at least make some sense.

Dont ever look at work as free. Your time is money, so someone's paying for it- YOU. This dolt over here should have told you that. Think about what you are getting back from it. If someone wont pay, trade. Bargain. Do whatever you have to but do not do it for free. It wont work all the time but for god's sakes never advertise yourself as being free labor(especially if they are offerign to pay- did you read the post above???), you are setting yourself up to being explioted, as well as incurring the wrath of hardworking, paid our dues artists. Advertising yourself is something different altogether- again, the dolt should have mentioned that as well. You get paid by experience and skill level.

The first thing you have to do is look at your competition. if you are not at least as good as them, dont quit your day job- for real. But put things in perspective, you are young and probably talented, and just need to be groomed- not taken advantage of. Set yourself up right, start doign business correctly from the jump so 5 years from now you are not struggling to command a certain amount of money for jobs.

first worry abou tdoing good work, then worry about the customers- if you r work sucks, no one will care anyways.

I must agree with ashmadux, their is a much more efficient way of building a portfolio than always going pro-bono. Sarafina stated "reasonably priced", not "I need some free...." so if someone is already offering to pay, take it! When I began designing I never did work for free, yes I adjusted my prices over time, but never free. Just because it's art does not mean it has to be free, that's borderline demeaning to our industry.
