Yes and no. at your level- assuming you are just starting out or young in the game, logos will most likely be a part of the 'package'. But logos (if its for someones business representation) are really identity design- where you literally create the face/identity of an entity/company. It can get really ugly in that area, because the price really depends on who you are doing it for and thier budget. I've seen logos go from 100 bucks to 15 grand. Personally if you will be using my design for your unadulterated branding and such I aint charging less than a grand- in business money, thats really cheap. If they don't wan't to pay it, fuck em. To a guy just doing work here and there you may only be able to eke a hundred or two out of them. Just remeber that (some) people aint stupid, so if they can get you to do a logo for them for 75 bucks they will take it, even if its crap.

Compensation is one of the greatest challenges for artists, because artists are typically the shittiest business people. You have to find you worth relative to others offering the same service at your level. If that means 15 bucks an hour, then thats that. But if your worth twenty, you better try to get it. Do some research for your market and see whats the average hourly rate for different kinds of design work.

The average scenario is company will tell you about a job and if you are interested, they will probably ask you what you are looking for- essentially telling you to value yourself. It's natural to go on the defensive, trying not to charge too much - but the problem is you risk undercutting your own self- especially if you dont have any real experience behind you. Companies know this and use it to exploit artists to get them at the lowest possible rate. It's just business, but it's definitely shady business. Believe me, they usually know how much they are willingt spend, even its its frickin ridiculous. To them, we don't have bills, we are just "artists"....we are working for fun or just to pass the time.

So do your research, there is a lot of growing pains wating for you. But if thats' what you want to do, pour your heart into it, get those skills down, and then get what your worth. And keep your day job! Here Here!!

Ashmadux if you do not see the value of doing free work or giving free samples you must not be alien.

I'm going to need an artist soon and I would not pay anyone who I can't see what they've done. If it's just one or two projects, I don't really see what the big deal is...

If it was no "big deal" you would have a designer already, because as you can see people are just dying to do free labor. What exactly are you giving back to him as compensation? agood feeling that he did something?

I dont see how you guys are confusing showing work to doing some free projects. If it's no big deal, the like i said to the other guy do something for me for free, i would highly appreciate it. Just let me know what you can do and le me take my pick. It's no big deal, right? Consider it an invetment in your business.

Theres something called ROI. You so called business guys shold know what that is- Return on Investment. Anyone considering doing free work should be looking at the return, period. That's what you measure your time/effort against. You have to be very careful. The folks avocating doing free this and that obviously won't do the same themselves. They are looking to make young, eager artists a 'victim'. These artists need to feel thier own balls, because we have the services they need...if they won't pay, fuck em I say. Let them rob someone else.

I am getting responses from people who don't seem to know crap about business, or the value of services. Some of you really need to get a clue. You can't even hate on me, because all I'm advocating is getting paid for doing work. If you have a problem with that then you are clearly showing you are not too bright.

Morpheus, please state what you need an artist for and what you need done. Let's all see if it's no big deal.

sorry, just some clarification- i would like to hire only people who advocate free work. they should jumping at the chance to do this. Ill art direct it, so it will definitely be looking good- just make sure you can take orders well, i dont really care for backtalk. Ill let the lucky ones affiliate themselves with my company. They can show my work and get jobs based on it. Just gimme my cut or my hungry lawyer will be biting on yer free asses.

Like the commercial says, "If it's free, it must be good!".

Ed, I'm not trying to rob anyone here. I just said that I wouldn't buy from anyone who doesn't have some sort of portfolio or sample so I can see their work. If I need new blinds on my window, I'm going to look at pictures of them or go into the store and see what they actually look like.

If an artist wants to do free work to get work, then he/she should. If they want to do something on their own for fun to build a portfolio, then they should take that route. Either way, I'm not buying anything in which I don't know what I'm getting. Creating a portfolio will give the artist a ROI, just like you're saying. You contradict yourself if you think otherwise.

If you needed a web design, I'm sure someone just starting out would do it for you for free. But if you're asking someone already in the business for free work, which you seem to be doing, that is completely different from what I'm arguing. I'd agree with you that no one should work for you free then, but I'm saying those are two different things.

And I don't have a designer because I don't need anything yet.

I must agree with ashmadux, their is a much more efficient way of building a portfolio than always going pro-bono. Sarafina stated "reasonably priced", not "I need some free...." so if someone is already offering to pay, take it! When I began designing I never did work for free, yes I adjusted my prices over time, but never free. Just because it's art does not mean it has to be free, that's borderline demeaning to our industry.

It should be an unwritten rule but then again thats just how the economy is in N.A. they want as much as possible for as little as possible. Not all but quite a few
