If you have something that is unique or a unique spin on a hobby or service, that would be your best route. Start a blog about it, put adsense on it to start. Then see which ads are showing most often and go digging for cpa offers that you can use to replace the adsense ads. Then keep digging that way.

Affiliate marketing is a good way to earn money too. Put up a site and sell other people's stuff. You earn a commission with each sale.
If you're talking about building a website for free and then monetizing it, I think a great way to get started is building a Squidoo Lens (that's what the call the webpage you can build). It is a co-op (revenue share) site and they already have ads built it and modules that you can insert to sell products from ebay or Amazon, for example. You don't need an affiliate account from either of those sites b/c Squidoo already has an affiliate account with them, and if anyone buys a product when they click through your module, they share the revenues with you.
Your job is to write the content and drive targeted traffic to your Lens (webpage). I have a free download at gainfinancialfreedom.org that teaches you how to do niche research and other things to get targeted traffic.
Look in the "FREE Lessons Now" section on the right side and it's called the "Mad Marketing Method" plan . Just get the feel for how things work first before investing any money into anything.
Use the "Contact" link if you have any questions and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
There is a learning curve but if you learn the basics, the opportunities to make money online are virtually endless. I warn you that it can be addicting...but nothing like doing work you look forward to doing.
Good luck with your venture! ...and don't give up when things don't come out as expected. Take a little break and come back when you're fresh and ready.
