Google CEO Eric Schmidt explained the move to employees, saying in an email obtained by the Journal, “We want to make sure that you feel rewarded for your hard work…We want to continue to attract the best people to Google."

This is all because Google faces a challenge in retaining its employees from competitors, especially nearby Facebook. According to the Journal, about 10% of Facebook’s employees are Google vets. A FOXBusiness Report

I heard on Bloomberg yesterday they have done this to stop people leaving to go to rivals like Facebook etc.

Exactly! And this is indicating some serious change on the web space, where Google is feeling cautious & insecure with their competition. It will be extremely interesting to see which of these tycoons are actually the best players.
