Well the time to check page rank depends but the criterion on which Google algorithm check rankings are:
1. Inbound links
2. Appropriate Meta Content
3. Appropriate use of KWs on page
4. Appropriate on-page content
5. Hyper-linking within site.
6. Off-page content with BL's
7. Entire website topic
8. IBLS
9. File structure & server settings
10. Domain name
I hope it helps you!

I agree that inbound links are probably most important.
It all depends on the competition, I have one site (non gambling) that I added a new post and in the next day the post was already ranking.
Its depends on the keywords selections. High competition keywords took around 2-3 months to be rank in 1st page of google. As compare to low competition keywords they took 30-40 days for this.
Depends On the Popularity and Relevancy and Competition .
It may take few days, months or years. We cannot say the correct time. It all depends on the competition, the quality of your website and on the back-links you get.
I have faced same problems. I worked for the site recipecardmarketing.com for 8 months ago. The site was at that time at first page for several keywords. Then owner of the website brought huge change in the website. After the change, the website has lost it position. Can anyone tell me How I can regain its previous position?

Fastest way to get into organic search results is when you lead with a video on Youtube, Google loves Youtube and always ranks videos at top.
general questions will get general answers.
The time will depend on the number of links/traffic you will get in the shorter amount of time, to rank over your competitors traffic. You also need good fresh content that contains your main keywords (a news site or a blog is a good for that). You can try opensiteexplorer to see how your competitors get traffic, set a good strategy and start rollin!
