It depends what your promoting I think and also who your trying to reach. Not everyone has a twitter account, same as facebook and myspace etc. And email marketing is often ignored due to high spam rates, even if its legitimate which is rather.. annoying!

email marketing : most email will be filtered into spam box. I received few advertisement mails, and I deleted them without reading it first.

twitter : it's very hot now. However, it won't be easy to get followers or the right customers.

    how about facebook ?

very well put. Getting to the right customers is the challenge here (as it was in the e-mail marketing too...). But tweets are the hot thing right now indeed.

people will view you as unprofessional if u use email marketing.

twitter will make u look like a professional people. especially with the RT feature. i aggree when the thread starter said 70 percents are made from twitter.

i did the retweet game for 3 months as experiment and it worth the time spent. i made a lot of contact, respected by a lot of people, known by a lot of people who think im an expert but im just a software engineering student. i got a lot of linkbacks since then. referred by many people.

email marketing game, never dream to do it. seen a lot. heard a lot.
twitter game. i stopped. told ya, its just an experiment. right now planning to do something even more genuine, , :just write something original and interesting:

Twitter is sort of tough to cut through all the clutter. It seems like twitter is just a bunch of business people that are all trying to do the same thing - the consumers and business people that are actually the potential clients are too busy to screw around on twitter. If you wanna make yourself look big, network with your peers, twitter is great. That's just coming from me, I'm no mega twitter-er. I have like 300 followers, nothing spectacular.

I would have to say Email would be most likely more successful than Twitter. Even though twitter is on the rise for new way to marketing. Yet, too many people are out there doing the same thing.

I've been telling my clients start using Twitter because I feel that the potential is unlimited if used ... just used that promoting a hand dryer.

Both have their pluses and minuses (see previous comments)...

If your message is more involved, then email is probably best, You can work on your copy skills to avoid getting filtered. Everyone has an email these days.

If you are just trying to do a quick hit based on a search term, then Tweet.

Since both are important objects in marketing, intent of two different type of communication can still appear different. Here is one good post about Twitter and Email considerations at SocialNetworking.LoveToKnow.com:

The magic of Twitter isn't immediately apparent until you start using it. Its usefulness becomes obvious within the first few entries. Depending on what your activities entail when you're on the Internet, there is a whole list of very useful purposes for Twitter.

    * Distribute blog update notifications to readers who follow your writing
    * Update the staff at your company with short status updates
    * Update your family about where you are during a road trip
    * Send updates from your cellphone so that friends can follow the progress of your hiking trip
    * Journalists can immediately alert colleagues of breaking news

The fact that Twitter is so mobile and easy to use makes it the tool of choice to let a large group of people know about "status updates."
    Why Use E-mail?

E-mail has had an important place in the daily activities of private life and of business. One of the primary ways that online businesses would use email is to generate "newsletters" and email them to the hundreds of people on their "opt-in" list. An opt-in list is a list that contains all of the email addresses of people who have selected to receive your newsletter. In many ways, Twitter is modeled after the "opt-in" scheme, and the list of Twitter "followers" is very much just like an opt-in list. So does this mean that when businesses consider Twitter vs. e-mail, that Twitter is going to replace the need to use e-mail? Not quite.

While Twitter certainly has a very important place in private life and in business, it doesn't have enough flexibility or scope to replace email. On the Internet, people tend to scan things very quickly, never remaining on one page for more then 20 or 30 seeconds unless something really catches their interest. Therefore, the only way to get your message in front of the eyes of such a "scanner" is with a short and simple one-line message notifying them that there's something new they may be interested in, such as a new blog entry, product, or event.
