Honestly it seems to me that Google and its affiliates benefit more from Google ads than the person who's posting these ads on their website. Is the person who posts these ads on their site even making any money?

Arguable,
But I'd say it's the other way around.
However, there is a method. It takes skill, research and hard work to make money as a publisher and an advertiser.
And yes, some people make thousands a day, tens of thousands a month and so on...
yes many people make a lot of money daily and monthly from adsense. to see proof go to sitepoint.com and check out the marketplace where there are websites for sale, people list their revenues and provide proof. This is also a great way to learn about other methods to produce profits online and see what is working currently in this industry. but remember its always best to be ahead of the pack, not following and playing catch up. so try and go with something new that you believe in and doesnt have too much competition.
It really depends on the level of your traffic. I have been on both sides of the debate.
Thread moved to the correct section.
IMO,
I would think that google ads are just secondary banners to fill up your banner ad spaces while you focus on generating traffic.
Once your website has a high traffic volume, then open up to direct advertisers where the real money is.![]()

I personally think google ads on people's sites look like crap unless they are purely informational websites, not selling products. They really detract from the buying process.

There is no doubt that google and its affiliates make big money from adsense, but none of the publishers (including myself) care, because we are making money too.
Adsense is definitely worth putting up, if you know what your doing. It will pay off big down the road.
I was just caution not to put them up on an eCommerce site, you may get customers clicking away to other sites and forgetting about you. Only use adsense on sites that are informational only.

I was able to integrate Google Ads well with an Ecommerce site, but it took up some time to filter out any worthy competitors. I may had lost a sale here and there but the $300-$500/mo from Adsense made up for it (statistically).
The new owner of the business also agrees, and has kept the ads up in specific areas. There are right and wrong ways to display such ads on Ecommerce sites, but it can certainly be a profitable experience.
In my opinion, traffic can be turned into cash much easier and in larger quantities by selling actual products or using affiliate links. For the price they pay per click and the hundreds of clicks in takes to make some good money, you could be making thousands by selling similar products to the ones people are leaving your site to go after by clicking on those links.

Refer 10 new members - you make $100/mo / Refer 100 new members - you make $1,000/mo
Refer 1000 new members - you make $10,000/mo...you get the idea ; )
Ok, we have a website - about ten clicks per day and growing, and want to put up some ads where we get payed when someone clicks on it. The question is, which ads are the best? (I know AdSense - Google ads) and Which is best CPC (Cost per Click) or cost per 1000 impressions, and why?
I am by no means an expert but if your website is still small I would strongly recommend not getting Google Adsense but sticking with a smaller company (e.g. AdBrite, Bidvertiser etc.)
If you have aggressive rivals who aren't scared to play dirty, they can easily mass-click your ads. Google will detect this discrepancy and probably terminate your account. So my advice is, while your website is small - don't go for Google ads!
Google ads discussion is really turning into a new industry online. Many people, and in fact thousands of webmasters worldwide are earning a living form their AdSense accounts.
It really needs concentration and study, Just like any other web field.
Many people just rush to posting ads on their websites and after a short time they earn nothing because simply no one clicks on their ads, while others are already making some 5/6 figure income from their ads.
