Just curious, how much on average would it cost someone if they wanted to advertise/ have a link put on a website?

With that specific question - there is no average.
The range however is $5 a month to $50,000 a month.
Anything above $30 + should be benificial assuming it was purchased from a reliable source.
Prices are determined by:
Home page or subpage
Physical location of link on site
Google PR
Alexa
And content.
it also depends whether you're charging cpm, cpc or cpa
in other words, it's not just how much the advertiser has to pay, but when
but in terms of ad pricing.....the rates over at adwords pretty much set a benchmark because of the of the efficient, bid driven auction market
supply and demand determines the pricing of ads
basically, when people buy ads, they'll compare what you're charging to what google's charging, and if you're charging more you have to provide reasons why

I knew this post was going to go in several directions.
You should of asked if your seeking conventional advertising such as banners and "adsense" type ads for the sake of producing traffic
or
if your looking for Text Link Ads which are static simple links with a chosen keyword as the anchor text for the sake of elevating the respective keyword's search engine placement and the page's PR.
So which one is it?
