You actually ask 2 questions. About Affiliate Marketing and about Ringtones. Let me try to help you.

Ringtones - NOOOO. there is no money to make with this, or it's very hard and I doubt your colleagues confirmation.

Why you don't give away Cell Phones for FREE and get 50.- commission for each one shipped ? Sounds way better, isn't it ? See here where you sign up for this.

But here comes the secret. It's all in the keywords. You have to get very specific with your keywords in order to get traffic to a site. In this case her a good keyword would be - where can i get a new motorola razr cell phone for free - (I didn't research this, just squeezed it out of my minibrain).

Keywords are the solution to any affiliates problem - which is traffic = sales.

This seems like common sense but it still astonishes me how people still can't/refuse to understand this?

Affiliate marketing is the the King and when using adwords using the right keywords is paramount and you dont need a lot of them to have a effective campaign.Laser pinpointing the customer and products is the art.

Yes that is possible. Its all on how much you work. I bet he did pad that amount a little, but combined with adwords, adsense, and affiliate programs.

I don't know if he is making crazy thousands of dollars but he is probably making decent money. Ringtones go for what $5 dollars and below?

I am working with an affliate program that is easy to do. I don't know where you are from but currently we are in Georgia and Texas. It is pretty good and helping my family make enough income to pay the bills and then some. I haven't posted in this thread for a while but I'd like to get back on the subject of ringtones. The reason why some people are making a fortune with ringtones is because they're promoting them in a "scam" type fashion. For example, if I wanted to ripoff teenage kids with ringtones I would basically startup a blog or fan site about a certain music artist. I would then throw in a banner or link telling visitors to the website that they would get free ringtones if they clicked on the banner and typed in their cell phone number on the signup form. The truth is, they would get free ringtones except they unknowingly subscribed to a $9.99/month service that they didn't know about. Google the term "ringtones scam" to see what I'm talking about.

I don't see how that's a scam unless they don't have the text on their site mentioning the unsubscribe at all...
Frankly, I put it down to the stupidity of the kids.
When I was a teenager, and poly-phonic ringtones had just come out, I made damn sure I read the T&C on those sorts of pages, and then I eventually figured out that I could actually just upload them to my phone from my comp anyway (these days everything's got bluetooth. Back then, I had to use an RS232 cable after walking through 15 miles of snow).

Eventually, I got into it at school selling them directly from my laptop for $1, after jacking into people's phones because no one had a CC at school.

As it is, it's the same thing with affiliate marketed private torrent services (let's just leave the legality aside for a moment, because it's a boring argument in legal semantics waiting to happen)
The networks themselves are free, but people have to pay to join.
I used to market that at uni, and made enough enough to pay my uni fees and living expenses, and still have enough for Friday beers.

It's a scam because a lot of these ringtones promotion websites don't have their terms or their monthly price in plain view. That's the reason why Google is starting to crack down on affiliate marketers who are doing this. Not to mention Azoogle Ads which is the most popular affiliate network for ringtones paid $1 million dollars to prevent any legal trouble.
