If you have a quality product that will convert well (priced right) and still have room to pay an affiliate a commission of $20 or more dollars - you can quickly recruit a small army of affiliates to market your products - an super affiliates who can market very well.

Yes, they do work! If you want a pretty good program, pm me and I'll shoot you a link. It's 100% free to join, and pays well.

My favorite is cj.com. I like their reports and the wide selection of products. If you build a niche around a certain topic, try googling for products/co,mpanies that are complimentary with the word 'affiliate' after it to find their affiliate programs.

There are two tricks to affiliation: The first is that the more presence you have online, the better it's going to work. The second is to actually affiliate with something that's in some way related to your site.
You can have a dozen websites that won't work because the domain's cruddy, the sites are pointless, or even just the wrong affiliate program.
Some people have a single domain and do huuuge volumes, and are damn well off because of it... like that dude who bought ituns.com (as opposed to itunes.com).
I wish I'd thought of it actually. I was one of the schmucks that confidently thought everyone would continue to download illegally

Like Madelyn_jem, I also know a few decent affiliate programs, but it depends on what your own sites are geared towards.
Drop me a PM if you want more info.
