Sold the world for $1500

Hey,

Some of you may remember me mentioning www.ownthemap.com before. I'm selling the world a country at a time through eBay to be used as advertising space.

It's come a long way since it was first created. I recently added a new backend system to it so each country owner can now get access to change their associated URL (and make money themselves by selling or renting their country) or access click count statistics. Statistics are also automatically generated and output onto the site itself, including the total value of countries sold... $1500+.

It sounds a lot but, to be honest, a lot of the money has either gone to eBay, PayPal or (as has the majority) into advertising, press releases, etc. The site has gotten more popular recently and bids have risen, especially with Canada selling at $255.

I'm now looking for ways to improve it further still. What else might I add to improve country owner experience? What new marketting methods could I use to increase awareness and site popularity? What's good and what's bad about the site?

Thanks again,

Daniel

xepio, the site looks great, and I am bidding in both of your auctions now!

As for increasing awareness, have you been sending out press releases? I have had much success in the past through press releases, and I recommend at least evaluating this to see if it would work for you.

Countries are added for sale on a weekly basis. As for those yet to be sold (including the big ones like the USA, Russia, UK, etc.), its a waiting game! The idea is that the site builds up to the bigger country auctions, with the best being saved 'til last! If there are any smaller countries that you're after, send me an email and I'll stick it up for auction next week.

As for press releases, they do work a treat! It has, however, been too long since I sent one out. I'm drafting one as week speak for release this week. Now I have the running total revenue published, the site has become more interesting for visitors! Do you recommend paying for them to be released or doing them for free? If so, where?

I acquired the help of a PHP scripter to create the backend and boy did I work him hard! Its pretty impressive stuff now. The country owner's get their own control panels, plus optional addons! There's also a nice referral scheme system online which (although costing me $60 a month!) works a treat for traffic! Its all PHP based... simple, easy and, more importantly, effective!

Good to see I've got some bidders from here too! Make sure if you're interested that you signup to my newsletter or eBay mailing list so that I can keep you posted. You can always remove your address if my emails get annoying!!

Any other comments or ideas?

Daniel
