Selling Websites?

Hi, I've been thinking about a startup opportunity which helps people sell websites.

I'm working on this assumption that it's very difficult to sell a website at a good price. I've been looking around a lot of marketplaces and the stream of web properties up for sale just keeps getting bigger, whilst it doesn't look like anyone's buying ;-(

Any how, if you've ever tried to sell a website - how would you rate your experience?

I know people who sell websites+domains quite regularly. My experience with content-driven websites is that they usually don't sell over 3 x their monthly revenue. Don't know about online shops and other sites though.

I once had this idea to build a site where domains (+ websites) where brokered as if it were stocks; the more demand, the higher the price.. Didn't go through with it.

I've sold two websites and each time I felt like I sold the website for too little money. I had to value the site myself and I didn't know how, so I just came up with a number I would be happy with. Something that could help me sell my website for a good price without undercharging for me or overcharging for the buyer would be great.

Hmm i sold a simple site, i only wanted $200 but got $500 which is pretty good. There is a right and wrong way to sell a site though, and alot of people dont know the difference.

A new place only for buying/selling websites might be a good idea. The only place like this I know is at SitePoint's.

As usual that's some great points lex.

The market for buying/selling websites kind of reminds me of Lloyd's Cofee House

To help make it easier for website owners to value sell their assets, I think there's room for something like http://www.zillow.com/ but for online properties.

It shouldn't even be that hard to implement - just a basic regression algorithm

What do you guys think?

With php a site like that could be easily done. Just use how long the site has been making a steady profit around the amount they specify to determine how many months to multiply the current monthly revenue by.

e.g. For a site making $200/month for 4 months

$200 x 6 = $1200 Est

e.g. For a site making $200/month for 12 months

$200 x 9 $1800 Est

It would be something around that you would just have to decide on how much the length of earning a certain profit determines how many months revenue.

Obviously that wont give a totally accurate pricing because other things such as how many hours work has to be done per month to get the desired income will affect the price.
