Paypal VS Merchant Account

I was just doing a lil anaylsis this morning and was surprised that of he last 50 orders i have had approx. 75% of the orders have been paid with paypal. Does anyone else have paypal and a merchant accout connected to there store so the customers have a choice of what to pay with?

I guess i think this is great for the fact that
1) paypal has a smaller % they take
2) maybe some of the customers wouldnt be customers if i didnt offer paypal.

I guess this is why some of the large companies are starting to intergrate it in just lately....

I have both. I find I have customers that are insistant on one or the other. If I didn't offer paypal to some of my customers then I would lose them. They will only pay by paypal because they are too concerned about giving CC info over the net.

You noticed that big companies are starting to return to paypal? I noticed this as well but thought that maybe I just didn't notice all along that they use paypal.

They either are just going over to it along with there merchant account or they are just "advertising" it more

I noticed that several domain registrars are now accepting PayPal. I guess paypal might be overcoming the horror stories that people were spreading around, and trust is being rebuilt.

Personally, after some researching I found an expert that said that a Paypal merchant account isn't a real merchant account. Sites that offer Paypal as a form of payment is a site the expert would usually be skeptical about. The expert said that it makes him question how good the sellers credit is.

On another note however, I personally think there is nothing wrong with the Paypal. I think it is just as good as a merchant account from anywhere else. Paypal is the official online payment method for Ebay, and a person that buys from Ebay is more likely to buy from online websites than a person that doesn't buy from ebay. Having multiple forms of online payment is always good, but personally I'd prefer Paypal regardless of what the experts say.

Read the post over.... i have a "real" merchant account but also have paypal.... so the customers have a choice.... but i do agree with you on if a site just had paypal.

Thumbs up

I have both! PayPal and Merchant Account for my clients.

My analysis is that, users are comfortable using PayPal because they've used it at ebay.

It is easier to setup if you are a seller.

Also you'll have 2 records of transactions. One from PayPal and one from your creditcard company. You'll be able to identify which transactions are legit.

I have to agree that more large companies are using a paypal account. Electronic Arts who I play an MMORPG through when I have the time are offering paypal. And the datacenter that we get servers from seems to prefer paypal. It was easier for my to pay them through paypal then through my credit card direct. Paypal was straight away. If i wanted to use a credit card they wanted me to fax them copies of my drivers license, copies of my credit card and a copy of my statement.

I guess perhaps because there are no chargeback fee's (besides the ammount charged) with paypal and for verified paypal users paypal has already taken care of some of the verification.

We use multiple payment methods wich not only gives our customers choice but it also gives us a backup payment gateway in the advent that one is down for some reason.

I offer both aswell. Having a merchant account isn't nearly as easy to get as paypal and some merchant account services actually visit your hosue and make sure your legit before they accept you( if you sell high ticket items ex. jewelry).
