My e-commerce idea (need feedback)

hi there

My true main goal is to set up an e-commerce website and then start from there. I've been coming up with a few ideas that i am uncertain of. Recently, this idea flashed into my head but i need feed back on. The idea is to start an asian online e-commerce store online that mainly target people (specifically asian) living in North America (Canada/USA).
But since people can still buy their stuff overseas...i still have doubt about this. Anyone can give suggestion?

I might be able to help you out in terms of developing an e-commerce site, marketing & sales.

If you watch the Apprentice, you'll knwo that you should never follow a business idea unless your truly believe in it. I would continue researching your current idea, and other ideas aswell and see which you find best.

I have to agree with mxer210, passion should be a key in any business you run and a naturla interest in what you are selling to be truly successful.

Targeting people is a good place to start, much more responsive than grass or cardboard boxes. But don't just start an e-commerce site because you can. You should start it because there is a market with a need or a want. And by market I don't mean a generalized demographic, like the millions of Asians in North America. You need a segment, a niche, that you have something unique and different to offer to.

Keep thinking of a product to offer and one product only. Maybe personalized toilet paper. Something that the North American Asian market would want to buy online and that you can afford to produce and distribute while making a profit.

Ideas are nothing without direction and so far you don't have a direction for your idea (which is pretty much nothing yet). Get specific, do the research, make a prototype, then let us help you from there.

Yeah I would target a specific niche, as those are the most popular with ecommerce because it's hard to compete against the large stores if you try to imitate them. Example, in Entrepreneur magazine, current issue,a couple makes 4,000,000 in sales from selling only table salt. Offering customization or targeting a specific need like the previous poster mentioned would be a good idea. Good luck with your iecommerce venture.

Keeping on the table salt idea (only because it makes this next bit kinda funny), how many different "customizations" of table salt can there be? Really, colour is the only thing I can think of.... just think... blue, green and yellow salt.

Think someone would eat the yellow salt, or would the Yellow Snow rule apply?

Just some fun things to think about right before the holidays (can't be serious 100% of the year, now can we.... gotta have some time off )

My table salt reference was referring to a store with a small niche. That is not personal/customized product. The Entrepreneur Magazine said right now the 2 best ways for small online stores to do well in ecommerce are 1) offering custom products, or 2) targeting a small niche.
