If you do good work you get alot of word of mouth anyway... business owners like to show off there new websites when they get them.

So it doesnt matter if you charge or not, as for "building up a portfolio crap", Bit pointless working for free, its like the designers who do sites for like £100 cause there so desperate for a lil work.

I run a website development business in my city, and I wont do any site for any less than £1000 - £1500, and I get plenty of work...

I would rather do 1 website a month for £1000 than 10 websites a month for £100 each... If you believe in your work you wont be working for nothing...

I suggest you stop messin about on the internet and go get a job.

I'm with Ash on this one...

I think both parties usually get screwed with the freebie webdesign deals. The guy designing it is usually horrible, and the designer gets nothing out of it.

Sure your link is at the bottom and he might refer you to his buddies, but they're all going to call you up and ask for free sites too.

Do good work, and pay yourself for it, even if it's not millions. Everyone deserves to be paid fairly. If you're going to make free sites, just make them for yourself, upload them to their own domains and showcase them. Overtime you might build traffic for ad revenue and it looks like you get a big client base.

To the owners, do yourself a favor and pay a few bucks to have it done well. I don't mean hire me, but get a real pro to do it, not some kid in his parents basement with a pirated version of dreamweaver and photoshop. Everyone seems to have a newphew who is a "designer" these days...

Well let me just tell you something about business if you do 10 at £100 each then you've got another 10 potential clients(recurring clients) again who could have 3 or 4 more sites. If you do 1 at £1000 you've got only 1 extra potential client(recurring client) who will most likely never get one again and if they do then they'll either modify there one or only have 1 more.

Have you ever heard of the famous quote from Henry Ford?

Based on both of your responses - are either of you interested in Logo design? If so, please PM and if possible include any samples of your work. I will tell you what we're looking for and what we're trying to convey and you can hop to!

Cool

To work for free or not work for free?

The answer, from someone who's done this for a long time, mostly work for money. Don't be afraid to price a job, and talk about how you'd like to be paid. If you are nervous about entering into a price negotiation, break it down into phases, with invoices going out at specific times. The smaller amounts will keep your client from fainting, and you'll get used to talking about money without batting an eye. It takes practice to do this. Practice, practice. Hint: the going rate for starter freelancers is about $50 an hour in the Washington DC market. Probably similar elsewhere, almost always lower than that if you are working with a talent agency, because that's what they bill abd they take a cut. Once you become more established you can certainly ask for more. Figure a minimum amount and never go below it. Clients like when you give them a range price and then don't increase it unless they really want to

It is indeed true that people that work for free devalue the rest of us. If you ever want to be taken seriously as a professional artist, designer, candlestick maker, etc., you have to get past the whole dilemma of how do you build a portfolio. So, over time, you take projects. Advertise similarly to what was mentioned above, make phone calls, freelance for larger agencies, work with a creative talent agency like Aquent or the like, and build your portfolio. Look around at Graphics publications out there to see where your work stands among those who consider a certain level of talent.

No one became Milton Glaser overnight, except the man himself. Good luck, and hope you make a lot of art.

Oh, one more thing...it's about the client. It's not about you. Remember that and you'll have a nice long career.
