budgeting advertising
How much to spend on advertising?
Spend more on PPC, banner ads, or what?

Yeah I've been asking the same question. Everyone seems to be pushing the pay per click on like google and overture. So many people are using that as their only advertising I think it's time to look for alternatives. Example, the top overture bid for the search phrase "ipod accessories" is $1.20 a click! I wanted to have a campaign for that phrase, but the bids were way to expensive for me to get anywhere near the top.

niche niche niche - get your CPC down..."ipod leather case" or "ipod aluminum carrying case" - get the people to the exact product page when they click, don't just have them go to your general home page, this will greatly increase your conversion rate.

Yeah I've looked into this. This is my only option and I"mprobably going to target the sub popular products that I sell. The bids are lower so it creates alot better opportunity.

If the niche thing is still too expensive another good way to get that advertising is go to popular sites that aim at the audience you want to attract.... i m sure you are doing this but mayb offer a trade of services or something.... What eric says is another good way to go about it... just check to make sure the market is there.

Yeah doesn't overture have a minimum $20 required per campaign? If I a bunch of niche campaigns, it could get expensive, so I'd probably have ot choose a couple good ones.

Well, theres always the low tech way. Flyers and business cards are an entrepreneurs best friend. You could advertise your site in a newspaper or back of a selective magazines for relatively cheap. Some newspapers even give out free ads occassionally just to get more people interested in using their newspaper as a form of advertisement. The only con to low tech advertising is that if you have an online business the user won't be right there in front of the computer to look at your site at that wrinkle in time. People may forget your webaddress or forget to look at the site completely. With every form of advertisement there is always a con though.

It also depends on how much you can turn over. For instance, the gambling industry has PPC's around the $20 mark, but that still gives them a good ROI.

Your way off the mark. I don't know where your getting your data but if you look at overture.com, which is the top ppc company, the max bids for phrases and keywords using casino, poker, online, and gambling keywords and phrases barely goes over $1. I tried atleast 10 various combinations of such words and phrases and the average was like 50 cents.
ex. the phrase "Online poker" has a top bid of 72 cents.
