my partners and I are probably going to purchase quickbooks... simply because many of the small businesses we're working with use it and recommend it.

I've used SQL-Ledger, Quickbooks, JD Edwards and Oracle Financials. For those who are starting out, I'd recommend SQL-Ledger specifically because it's free (there is a paid version, price is $40 IIRC, very reasonable).

SQL Ledger, since it uses a Microsoft SQL Server or MSDE installation (it sets it up for you), if you have your own server, you can run queries on it and integrate it into your website if you know SQL.
You can download it for free from http://www.freeaccountingsoftware.net/

Quickbooks is good as well, but can be a little pricey.

JD Edwards and Oracle Financials are more enterprise-level accounting tools with options for procurement, purchasing, expenses, etc. and can manage multiple companies in (what I like to call) an empire format (parent company and subsiduraries).

Hope this helps...

Hmm there are a lot of Quickebooks lol. Anyone recommend one? I will be using it for the start of my online store. There will not really be an inventory because I will be using a dropshipper. Thanks

I would have loved to try it out, but apparently it's only available in the United States... not much help to me as I'm in Canada.

Microsoft has some great reviews and then a lot of real bad review at amazon.com. Nothing in between

Re:

I have been using Quickbooks Online. It is working out well for me because my accountant and my can access the books in real time at his office. I also don't have to worry as much about backups. It doesn't do everything, but it works well for small businesses.
