Search Engine Optimization

Posted 11-17-2007 at 06:33 AM by Nick R
Search Engine Optimization, the term y'all know and hate. Over the next few decades I'll be writing a few posts on how to Search Engine Optimize your site. I'll cover the use of SEF URLS, Page Info and

Page Info: Keywords, Meta Information & Clean, Optimized Code
Search engine optimization is mainly about recreating your web site, removing technical obstacles in order to achieve higher usability and accessibility for the users. Of course, the final objective is to drive more traffic and visitors to your site from the search engines. By page info, I mean things like meta tags and header tags. Meta tags are small snippets of information that, among others, come in the form of meta keywords and meta description. Lets take a quick look at youngentrepreneur.com's meta tags;
Code:
<meta name="keywords" content="entrepreneurs, entrepreneur, young entrepreneur, business, small business, young business, youth business, business forum,entrepreneurship, young and successful, business blog" />
<meta name="description" content="Young Entrepreneur Forums - your online discussion forum to share and talk about Entrepreneurship. A place to learn and to help others with starting, managing and growing successful business ventures." />
As you can see, there are two sections to the tag, the name, and the content. For the keywords tag, you need to know what Keyword Density is, or KD. You need to find the most used phrases or words on your site and add them to the meta keywords information. There's no limit to how many keywords you can have, but I recommend keeping it to a small amount like 10. The meta description should just be a short sentence describing your site, google sometimes uses the meta description as the page description on the index, so be careful what you put .

I'll come onto the rest later .
