Blogging as a Learning Tool

Posted 06-22-2009 at 12:19 PM by mjb96
I often see people say they want to get into blogging but don’t know what they should blog about. Whenever I see this question, I always see people say that they should blog about something they know a lot about, something they are an expert in. This is typically the method that is taken, and I have nothing wrong with that. However, I don’t believe people should limit themselves to only blogging about something they know a lot about. I believe people can also blog about something they may like to learn about.

For example, let’s say someone enjoys baseball and follows their home team but wouldn’t consider themselves a “huge fan” of the team based on their lack of knowledge. Let’s also say that this person wishes to become more of a dedicated fan and know as much as they can about the team and it’s players. Why not blog about it? Doing so forces you into reading up on the team and posting about items regarding the team. If you make it a goal to keep up to date with the team and write about it in your own blog, you are learning more and more everyday.

I believe this method is applicable to just about anything. If you surround yourself in an area because you are going to blog about it, you will only learn more and more. This may also lead to interaction with those who may be considered experts in the field. Interacting with these people increases the learning curve as well.

So when you decide to start a blog and are looking for a topic, don’t limit yourself to something you already know. Consider something you would like to learn about as blogging can truly be a learning tool.
